Working on my first ever vehicle custom. I ordered a couple of trashed VAMPs on Ebay for $3.50 each and bashed them together to make a four-seater version.
Kind of figuring it out as I go (and wishing I had bought more styrene when I was at the model shop), but overall feeling pretty good about where it's going. Question for those with experience in this sort of thing: at some point I'll need a filler to hide some seams and smooth out some rough edges. Is there a particular product or products you'd recommend I use? Any techniques/tricks of the trade you might suggest? Last edited by nancy2K; 08-24-2022 at 02:46 AM.. |

I don't have any advice to give you, but this is a great idea!

I am pretty early into my vehicle customization experience as well, but one thing I have found is that model making often mimics the processes done on bigger scale. So if you ever watch any of those custom car shows or have done work on one when you chopping stuff up and fitting together you almost always have to add in filler to smooth out and cover gaps. they typically use a bondo type filler and then have to sand the whole body and prime and paint. If you are going for a really finished look on this you can use something like milliput on large gaps which sands well, green stuff or on really thin gaps I use Vallejo Plastic Putty (a little bit of water on your finger or back of a brush handle can get this pretty smooth). This is based on my limited experience and observations. Hopefully more experienced builders can weigh in as well.

I will add that most real world vehicles have panel gaps and based on what you have there so far it doesn't look bad. In fact it looks more realistic to me because they look like natural body panels you would see on a vehicle compared to what you see in a lot of toys where it is molded plastic and there isn't a true gap, but a indentation in the plastic instead. So if the gap is because of panels coming together I wouldn't worry about it so much. If the gap is because something isn't fitting right/lining up because you put pieces together and the break looks unnatural to the body lines of the vehicle I would try and fill them. Things will also look a lot better when you prime them one color and you can get a better sense of how things flow.

Hey that?s an awesome idea and this will look great when your done for sure! As far a filler, maybe try ? green stuff? to smoothen it out. Not sure if that will do exactly what your looking for but if you plan on painting it when your done, it should do the trick?
Edit: I hate how this site changes every apostrophe and air quotes to question marks. Uhhgg.

I did something similar conceptually for one of my first customs. I would recommend a two part putty like greenstuff or milliput if you need structural support. If it is just smoothing gaps,Tamiya makes a softer putty in a tube, I believe it is called squadron putty or something like that.

I've wanted to do something like this since I first saw the Lamborghini Cheetah the VAMP was based on, which was a 4-seater.

To fill in the gaps of a 1/18 long wheel base Jeep conversion I used JB Weld. That steel mixed epoxy made a great filler. Could try mixing 15 minute epoxy with ground styrene for a home-made plastic version.

Ooh, awesome project, looking forward to following your progress! I haven?t customized a vehicle yet beyond some stickers so I don?t have any answers to your questions but I can offer enthusiastic support! Haha.
Never saw the Cheetah before so super cool inspiration! Gonna be so cool once you get it finished!
