I've done some photo backdrop pieces before using foam board and such this time I'm going to make a whole building. The process is pretty simple, although tedious.
Get the cheap foam board (96 cents at Walmart), wet down one side of the board and peel off the paper. Using a straight edge and pencil as a scribing tool carve detail into the foam and paint. So, I sketched out a rough idea layout, I'm sure things will change on the fly as I'm building. Calculated dimensions for scale and drew it out on the foam board. Cut it out and set it gently in the tub with about a half inch of water to thoroughly soak one side of the foam board to remove the paper. Glued the side with paper to another piece of foamboard cut to the same size. grabbed my yard stick, measured and scribed the lines. Since I was going for a cinder block appearance I used a dull pencil to make thicker marks. First the horizontal: Then the more tedious vertical: Set a figure and truck in front to see that everything was sizing up about right. Layed down some of the first exterior paint. First Dark gray, then a black wash and then dry brushed on some light gray. Also cut out and framed the first window. Using "popsicle sticks" and craft match sticks. Added "glass" cutting them out of some plastic packaging that would otherwise be trash. Also made the window functional which was really quite time consuming but quite satisfying https://twitter.com/i/status/1500143109015023621

The scale, design, painting and dry brushing all look fantastic! Can’t wait to see where you take this!

Thanks guys, I will make updates here. Trying to take pics of most of the steps to make a tutorial of sorts out of the process. I have a bunch of stuff 3d modeled to print and use in this as well. I'm still trying to decide if I want to try to make it so I can disassemble it and stack it flat so it won't take up so much space when not in use.

Getting a chance to work on the diorama some more. Constructing the front door. I built the main shape out of popsicle sticks, then added a second frame to the back side of the door to make it thicker, then skinned it front and back with styrofoam plate and recycled some more plastic packaging for the window, which I won't glue in until the rest of the door is painted. Going to work on the door frame next and try a couple different types of hinges.

Had to cut the door opening out a bit wider, had a little knife slip that I will have to patch later. But functioning front door is in. Still have to cobble together the door handles. But it has a functioning window and door now.

This looks great! I always marvel at diorama guys' creativity and patience to make such cool displays. This one looks like no exception, and I look forward to seeing how it turns out.

I'm kicking around trying to use some corrugated cardboard sheet to make a roll up style door. Here's what it would look like unpainted.

Plate glass "window" installed in the other opening.
You may have noticed quite a bit of warping on the wall in previous pics, that is because foam board will shrink a bit on the painted side pulling the board towards that side. The cure is... to paint the other side. I'm getting ready to start cutting the garage door openings and that would have only made the warping FAR worse if I didn't go ahead and apply some paint to the interior wall. Since this is supposed to be an abandoned building I chose a color that I felt would make it seem dated. More details still have to be made all over this thing and it will get more weathering/aging in later steps.
