So as I've been working my way down to the last few vintage Joe vehicles I wanted to add to my collection, I decided to pick up a 1990 Cobra Rage. It's one of the few post-1987 vehicles that I like the overall design of, but it still had a few quirks I didn't care for. My primary beef with this vehicle has always been the wheels. These look like large metal drums, which would be terrible for maneuvering. They changed these to tires in the ROC version's re-release, but those looked pretty bad as well.
Anyway, I decided to customize a couple as some lightly armored fast attack tanks. I'm drawing a little inspiration from the Batman Tumbler from the Nolan movies, and and aiming to make a black/silver version and a desert camo version. I ended up making the following modifications: 1) Sawed off the original wheel posts so I had a flat surface to epoxy new axles on to. 2) 3D printed some traditional style tires that looked like they'd also be good off-road, along with designing new front and rear axles that would allow it to mount and sit slightly lower. I went with dually wheels in the rear with the Tumbler inspiration. 3) Removed the "curb feeler" wings from the front of the vehicle...these just seem like they'd be incredible easy to get hung up on something and immobilize the vehicle. I couldn't think of a practical reason to leave them on. 4) Removed the running boards on the right and left sides. There's nothing for passengers to grab on to, and they'd be in the way of both the turret and the rocket pod. I did leave the rear running board since it's out of the way and still has the grab bar. Aside from paint, the other thing I still want to do is design and 3D print a dashboard with steering wheel. The lack of a dash in this vehicle bugged me with how much interior room it has. Anyway, here's the in-progress pictures so far! Last edited by Cryoguns; 05-28-2021 at 09:25 PM.. |

That looks pretty cool. I really like the dual wheels in the back.

Thanks! I got a little more work done. The other nuisance with this toy was the lack of a dashboard. I put one together and printed it off on a resin printer. It should just need a coat of paint and then the black Rage will be done & ready for pictures. The desert camo Rage is taking a bit more time since there's a lot of masking to do.
Here is the dash on Thingiverse for anyone who wants to do the same. The steering wheel is from an AWE Striker (I liked the gulled steering wheel look for the Rage as a fast attack, lightly armored tank. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4893101 |

Great touch with the steering wheel and screen!
