I’ve been working on a radio controlled Mauler with the guidance of Joecollection18. I’ve clogged up his rc warthog thread enough so figured I’d start a new thread here. Right now the RC chassis works and the turret control is functional. The last bit was wanting to create a gunner position in the turret. I tried to match the style of the toy’s detailing and in the process recreated the one antenna holder since it was blocked by the hinge for the hatch. The paint was mixed to best try and match the color of the Mauler. I’ll post more pics and vids soon. Thanks.

nice!
i see you relocated the antenna post. that post caused me headaches. Should have relocated it like you did!... very nice. I could not match the mauler color with the proper plastic color. so that held me back. wow, amazing what paint can do. perfectly blended in, I should try that. is Toolbooth staying up top for now, or do you plan on being able to button him up? Any turret/bustle basket plans? here's a pic of my "Australian- Anzacs in Nam" inspired Mauler. Basically Aussie Joes helping out the Yanks taking on Cobra Island

The Mauler is looking good so far, and I like the bush hat on Lady J.

Very cool keeping the camo from the Lynx and the Equalizer. And I love the tarp cover to help deal with all the rain in the jungle.
This gets me thinking again about some ideas I have to make a proper turret for my mini-mauler. I never really thought the Lynx turret looked correct. And a new turret design could allow for 1 or two more crew. But I'll just put this idea in the stack with all the others.

I love that mini-Mauler, man. Better every time I see it.
Hatch looks good on the big guy, too. Are you going to get the main gun's elevation to be remote-controlled as well or is that too far down the rabbit hole?

Thanks Zap! It's funny you should mention that
I just posted a video with the turret rotation and cannon elevation being tested. I wasn't sure I wanted to tackle that with the turret being so low profile but I had some micro servos and figured I'd give it a shot. I'd like to improve the motion to be more "scale" but I think it's pretty good for a first pass. Thanks again for all the feedback! https://youtu.be/LnE9M5S7264 Above is the link to the youtube vidoe.

Since the base Mauler is mostly done I've decided to work on a modified Equalizer. I think it'd be great to get all the radars and guns motorized with the turret etc. I just got the rolling chassis up and running using a set of Joe Mauler Works' suspension. It's so plush! This is inspired by the Tamiya Flak Gepard kit from back in the day that had all the spinning radars and motion.
I dreamed of this kit as a kid. Since I will never have the real thing I will make a Joe version. video: https://youtu.be/X4GK9RMt_5w Some pics of the Equalizer. Using a mauler hull because it's set up for real wheels etc.

Doing some more work on the Equalizer project. Getting the radars to move. I have the front one oscillating which was pretty exciting. I'm hoping that was the hardest one to work out. The back one just spins, then there is the elevation for the weapons and the turret rotation. I'm also toying with the idea of flashing LEDs at the ends of the cannons, but haven't decided yet.
Here's a video of it tearing up my yard and almost getting stomped by one of my kids. https://youtu.be/LE-cczNPboI

Some more progress and steps back. I reworked the power system to all work off the main batter so no more AA batteries to run the radar motors. But this increased the RPMs - 3v to 5V and my radar setup didn't like this. So I had to spend time making it more robust. Then when I went to do the turret rotation I realized all the added weight to the turret made the rotation very difficult, even by hand and also not smooth. So I made a friction ring that lets the turret be supported in all places and smoothly spin. But then when I mounted the rotation motor and it was all working I couldn't close the tank. The motor is too big when paired with the HL power pack. Ugghh! I thought I had room but with all the tweaking I'd made the turret gear large diameter pushing back the motor.
Now I'm waiting for some other motors to see if I can get one to work. I'm sure that some combo with get things working, but the delays are frustrating. On the good side, this setup is more robust than it was previously and that feels good. I was able to replace some of the skirt armor brackets. I have a theory that the skirts shrink over time, like the tow cables, and that snaps the brackets. Right now the one skirt is too small to fit he stock bracket locations so I'll need to mod that a little.

Posted the video in final projects but figured it'd be worth putting here too. I should probably post some info on the finished vehicle soon.
I just finished up a video featuring the RC Equalizer I've been working on. https://youtu.be/tdc4RfOT648 Bazooka needs to get the Slugger in a good position to fire some shells on Cobra's base. It's up to Heavy Metal, Cover Girl, Sergeant Slaughter and the Equalizer to provide defense against air threats. Will this team be able to fend off the waves of Cobra air attacks? Tune in and find out!
