little updates.
my 3D printer broke after years of intense service. I am printing the little brackets with its sister, attempting to fix it ( yes, the machines are replicating themselves.. fun times .. Warthog shortened (mauler) rubber tracks: They would slip too much, so I added teeth to engage the rubber better. t'was working great until I climbed a mild ramp. see pic. rubber tracks are not good if they are this stretchable, driven aggressively without possibility to slip under load, in a front drive configuration, for a heavy vehicle. ( warthog Rc far outweights Rc mauler ) sadly, the mauler tracks will not be a suitable option for an Rc warthog, unless it goes on a diet, and is rear-wheel drive. the good news is that dozens of mauler tracks will be spared from this shortening mod and therefore could fulfil their purpose for other maulers.

a side by side comparison of European Warthogs ( France,Spain,Uk,Belgium, Holland, Germany, Italy...) with North American one ( Canada, US)
euro green is a richer green which culturally resonates more as a generic modern (in 1988) army green, much more "toy" like. the US green , in contrast, has a WW2 "dated" and "too real" vintage feel according to my european peers. this is an opinion / take which might justify the choice made here. also note the north American toy was built in the USA while the European version in Spain. both toys appear to met the same quality specs, but I suspect the Euro green plastic composition is a little more elastic. the side door hinges are a bit more resilient. could be age, ( euro mold a few years younger ) but in my experience with injection molding, metallic or strong pigments tend to affect the plastic quality over time. i love both. the euro version hatches are of a lighter grey so are the missiles, lighter orange. on the Rc conversion I am still dealing with some sneaky leaks which could compromise electronics & overall buoyancy. while I could have went ahead I am choosing one last time to attempt to achieve a safety buoyancy. meaning, when warthog is flooded, that it would still float for recovery, rather than sinking to the bottom. if not possible, I have safety bright orange buoys for retrieval, and hoping the bottom is less than the buoy lines. this project can be frustrating. i am patient and hope everyone understands. the RC part is easy. it's the water element which cannot be underestimated. At the Marines Amtrac school, they say that you can only control the vehicle, not the elements. both can kill you. I can still control the build of the vehicle before it's off in the elements, so I want the best possible chances while I can. meanwhile to take a break I built 3 mauler conversions over the weekend...

Wow, is that the color of the Action Force stuff? So cool you have both. You're going to open a Gi Joe tank museum! And all those maulers! And you made them all RC? I'm thinking that some IR battles might be cool. Use the Heng Long or Tamiya setup?
So my parts came in! And I scrambled to get it all working. I've never wired up a tank like this before but it went pretty smoothly. I bought a different board than the one you suggested since I was being cheap...and I wanted turret motor control and I found this one on ebay. Wasn't sure it'd work but seems ok (only $17). https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Excavat...e/124443511837 I also ordered a turret motor for the same VS tanks and a ring gear. The gear is too big but I'm thinking my weekend project will be designing, printing and installing the gear to get turret rotation. https://www.ebay.com/itm/RC-1-24-VS-...W/283942531006 I am so thankful for your videos and pioneering spirit. You made this so much easier. The motor fit perfectly after cutting off some of the ends and the pieces from the mauler sprocket. I couldn't believe it was up and running so fast. I'm probably going to order some good batteries. I cut the connector out of my cheap rock crawler truck so I could use the batteries. Oh and that control board has all weird connectors so I just soldered the motors to the board permanently but why not? I couldn't wait to order connectors Anyway here are some pics. Thanks again for all the guidance.

awesome!!
That was fast! How is the drive? Haha I actually used that turret gearbox on my mauler a long time ago. I wasn’t happy with it. YMMV I still have the files of the turret ring gear I made that would mesh it and with its support that lodges into the turret bottom. I was laser cutting nylon, overkill. I am sure printed will be fine, the tooth are quite large. Do you want these? Heck I still have the parts here if you want them. Will get back with pics later. I bought stuff on ebay a while back and they gave me a similar board. It was said to be for tanks or dual jet boats. I could never get it running. Glad it worked out for you! Even cheaper, if it works and runs smooth, great! Any vids? Let’s see this thing ... I CANNOT wait until we do mass mauler gatherings... Haha awesome

OK, I made a fun video of the first test runs late last night. I like how you always put Joes standing around working on your stuff so I'm doing the same. Some just watching, some riding the tank to determine how stable it is and a MOBAT to compare and contrast. I think it moves pretty well and smoothly, similar to my heng long Tiger tank. Let me know what you think.
https://youtu.be/ho3_9jGILOc Thanks for the offer on the turret ring. That is really cool, but I'd like to do it myself. For me the process is the fun part. Once I'm done, I sort of lose interest and move onto the next thing. I've never printed a gear or anything mechanical like that so I think it'll be a fun learning process. And I like the satisfaction in finally getting something to work. I hope that makes sense, but I really appreciate the offer and all the help so far. Maybe after I fail a few times I'll change my mind That is smart that you made the gear separate from the connecting piece, so you can iterate on the gear faster? or replace if teeth break. That's really helpful seeing what you did. I hope I have time to work on this over the weekend.

Very nice! fancy driving there! great music.
thanks for the thanks haha. your videos inspire me to draw and make better videos like yours. what do you use to edit your videos/ add music? youtube is Ok with you sampling joe sounds? i had videos blocked because of music playing in background. I went through my stash of mauler scrap parts which I am cleaning... by building more RC maulers. such an easy conversion. one last build and I have these parts left: i have a set of engine panels ( L & R ) with paint on, a clean engine panel (left) one storage panel ,right , painted 2 storage panel , right, clean willing to trade i need 1 front hatch Right, and 1 storage panel Left to finish the last mauler. how about some suspension tryouts? can we maybe discuss some sketches/ character art in exchange for a set of suspension bogies? I am also looking for somebody doing custom decals. anybody? also... We have Rc Maulers, Warthog, possibly Mobats with the exact components and Lynx, Equalizers, Wolverine... what about Cobra? any suggestions? if I grab a black warthog ( night rhino) put cobra adder missiles on top, does that make a cobra AIFV with a hiss color theme? |

Thanks. Making that video was fun. I just use my iphone and sometimes a gopro. For editing I use adobe premiere. I got flagged for the music on the Destro Learns to ski video, but so far that's the only one. And I think it just means I can't monetize the video, but I don't care about that. I think it's more a problem when you get thousands of views but I'm not sure.
I just picked up two junker maulers for this project. They're actually not that bad and one ran right out of the box. So I've cannabalized parts from both to make the complete RC one. I need a track for the one but I don't have any extra parts really. I can 3D print the mud guards, antennae and grenade launchers if you need stand-ins for those. They look pretty good with a coat of paint. Prices on ebay for those bits are nuts. What kind of sketches are you looking for? Vehicles or figures? Like that covergirl sketch I did? And I think an RC HISS would be amazing. Cobra vs Joe tank battle...get the IR systems working. There's a guy on youtube who is making a Moray RC. He rigged the steering to the turret. Looks pretty slick. I could see that going up against your warthog. https://youtu.be/qUNZE20Awss

I haven't been commenting lately, but I'm still watching. Good stuff!
Those Bruder tracks look too wide for the Mauler. How wide are the various tracks you bought from them? The type that come on the "Bruder 02444 CAT Track -Type Tractor" are about 1.25" wide. If the type you have is wider than that then the narrower ones might be worth a look. As for custom decals, get in touch with Bad Mother customs. He has an eBay shop and he does custom printed waterslide decals. You would need to seal them with a ton of clearcoat once in place to prevent them from washing back off in the water, but he will make anything you need. I got custom Cobra sigils in silver and made to the size I specified to make Cobra officers a few years back. They turned out great and he was easy to work with. Pricing was also very reasonable.
