Late night thinking...
I spent this Sunday with different propellers, deflector plates, etc.. Am not happy with the authority I have with the props. The thrust is asymmetrical when using tamiya props and the overall thrust is unsatisfactory. I tore apart the leaky , prop pods and am considering a plan B I need more power, more thrust. Whenever I push the propellers further back, the thrust is greater, but I cannot use such a configuration. Props sticking out at the bottom of the hull of a tank means risk of damaging the props, having to drive accordingly .upon driving on terrain, angles of attack greatly reduced, props catching on things. Not acceptable. When I tuck the props inward, I lose all power and weird cavitation happen. I would reverse the prop and the warthog would still creep in reverse. Asymetry, lack of authority. Time for plan B So I had kept the warthog rear corner towers empty. I went to great length to not cut them, I preserved them as separate chambers. Intent was to fill them with air pouches for floatation, spare storage room, bilge pump OR... vertical jet drives. Similar to what is used in fish tank pumps. Impeller, vertical motor, and a nozzle shooting to the side. Water inlet from the bottom. I made a quick eyeballed, guessed design and printed it quick. An impeller, a housing and a motor mount plate. Well, here is a quick video. My neighbors must hate the noise at 1 Am https://youtu.be/a75ZyjsKHoM Although having the motors in the rear towers will elevate the center of mass, not ideal, This solution will increase the authority. That is having the thrust at the widest possible positions for optimized maneuverability. And it. preserves the inside benches. I can now also use larger batteries under the crew floor and simplify the rear leaky hull wall. The jet drive works amazingly well. Motor can be reversed, but stream and thrust stay the same. It shoots quite a stream and I can feel the thrust at 6V. Again, convenient to replace should a motor burn or an upgrade is required. Motors will be higher than the waterline so should not be flooded. What I discovered with this, is that the unit can be above water and the bottom input opening is sucking like a mini vacuum, and is still able to cycle, and stream the water out. This is great because the location I want to place them , above the rear idler wheels, bottom of rear corner towers, does not get submerged very deep. In shakey waters, an horizontal jet drive or prop would run dry and starve if not entirely submerged, cutting thrust. This guy i have here is able to keep on running while barely kissing the water surface. Very happy Next step... reverse? Reversal plates or a clever design to achieve reverse thrust? That compact jet drive... mmmhh... RC Cobra night landing?

That's brilliant and so compact! And as you say, easy to maintain or replace motor.

JUST tested the jets. They are loose, unevenly tucked hastily in the towers
I think the stream should be above the water for visual feedback. These are the standard slow motors. Eheheh... https://youtu.be/9PvO0PeF0aE |

Ambitious project indeed. Started last November. Do you remember the toy commercial ?
I am a happy big kid attempting to bring to life this cool toy, thanks to today’s technology we have. Some maneuvering today, at 7,2V : https://youtu.be/I2UHCO3JhUQ I do not have reverse on the jets yet, but enough authority to turn around when stuck in a corner. A proper reverse is needed, and safer! I have ideas for later... Entire table has be splashed. I could have the jets submerged, but from a distance, I might not tell if the tracks or the jets are running, so having them spray above is a good visual feedback. Also great visual feedback that they are not jammed, and the stream is a good indication of the thrust. A lot of wiring issues. Had to dismantle the harnesses to find a broken connection. The weight of the added epoxy and wiring harness, electronics, switch box.. has made the warthog even more nose heavy ... ughhhh I should redo the entire deck and crew tray with less epoxy and patch walls, now that I know how to do it. If flooded, it still sinks. So redoing the entire inside with less partitions patchwork and trapping ALL available air inside under the crew might keep a warthog buoyant when flooded, I can’t tell unless I build it. Right now a bit reluctant to do more flood test since the connector wall is epoxied into the deck... Proper drying would be time consuming. |

Just watched the video. It looks like you have a ton of power. Great idea putting the jets above the waterline so you can see what's going on.

The smallest Reliable ones I could find are 20mm. I saw a video of what can be done with that, insane power. The warthog hull is not very stable and does not track well either I think if it speeds off on steroids it would roll over, like a souped up bus on a race track. I am very happy though. It looks cool and appears to work . Am not sure how well it will work if there is a bit of a breeze or current... You guys know I want to risk this toy at the beach, right?

That’s looking great. Can’t wait to see it in the surf!
Mauler question is there a clean way to remove the drive wheels (back wheels) from the axle? I tried just pulling them off but was worried I’d snap something. I don’t want to ruin that back axle if it can be avoided. Thanks for any help. Hoping the RC parts will arrive soon.

sorry been sidetracked/ distracted with paid work...
nice pics on skystorm thread! am behind with replies mauler: ,if you have good shoulders, pull straight from both sides with equal force. i have one bad shoulder and can't pull straight anymore. when it lets go you might hit something, and fling it. do this with pillows on both sides or with a blanket wrapping the mauler. when you accidentally fling the mauler that's when things get dented or cracked. plan B, easier, sacrifice one hub cap with pliers. either chew it or gradually cut it until it lets go. if you have needlenose pliers with a strong bite good bite but able to insert a thin cloth or paper ( to reduce teeth marks) in between their teeth and the hub, squeeze the hub gently , rotate it, repeat. you can gradually loosen a hub . plan C, elaborate. build a pulling jig similar to bearing puller tool using metal plates, wood. need to build a plate covered with cork not to mar the mauler hull with a cut to slide the mauler drivewheel support flange into. plate needs to fit well and spread the load. mauler sides are not perpendicular because of molding draft, so you have to account for slight angle. build second plate with screws, or make a 2 part collar that wraps onto inside of drive wheel. tighten spreading screws other method: find or fabricate a 2 prong wedged fork that fit snuggly behind drivewheel. push in , remove, rotate, push in further, repeat until you can loosen hubcap sometimes large needlenose pliers tapered ends can be used if you wrap/tape the ends to not chew onto the hull and wheels. cardboard inserts can do the trick. the principle is to wedge evenly two sides of the wheel, use maximum area to avoid plastic deformation, and cover/avoid any sharp tool edges that will sink into plastic. typically, if you feel it moving a bit, good, but small steps while rotating prevents distortion. if it does not budge.. careful. the mauler is a tough toy. some come easy, some are tough to pull out. good luck! i just stored on gearboxes and electronics. mauler racing league this summer?

That did it! I put a blanket under and over the axle and just started pulling as suggested. I gave up, then wrapped some cloth around the wheels and just pulled, slowly increasing the power. I was close to giving up again when the one wheel suddenly let go. The blanket saved the pieces from flying all over the room. The hull is fine as I was able to put all force into pulling the axle. Thanks so much for the ideas and advice. I don’t think I’d have cranked on the axle this hard if I didn’t have the info.
