I had some free time today and knocked out a few more replacement parts for a bare bones Killer Whale I picked up for $15.00.
I've made some improvements on the originals and tried to stay true to the originals. I don't own any of these in their original parts and am just working from pictures and a micrometer. I have gone through a few iterations to make sure the tolerances are as good or better than the originals and so far everything is fitting well. They print pretty well on a Prusa but would probably be great on a resin printer. I need to pick one of those up. Anyway, those old guys that were doing toy design back in the 80's were really amazing. My hat's off to them for the level of detail and guts to put in the work to make these. The Hasbro of today is really standing on the shoulders of giants. Enclosed please find a few snapshots of the retooling for the Killer Whale LCAC. Improvements discussed: 1. New Deck Gun based on guided artillery rounds, using M982 105mm 2. New Deck Gun Retainer for the 105mm Deck Gun 3. New propeller design using 4 foils vs. 3 to reduce noise. 4. New propeller shaft design to accommodate the new prop. 5. New shrouds, based on original design, to accept new propellers. WIP: 1. Manned antiaircraft gun battery 2. Depth charge releases 3. Improved missile battery and holder with greater resilience and ratcheting action to stay in place. 4. Replace thumb drive with powered engines (???) I guess eventually I could just scale them up for G.I. Joe Classified, if I could find those in stores...

The more I keep hearing about people using 3d printers the more I want to invest in one myself.
How are the more affordable options? $200-$400 range? I'm seeing some that are around $700-$1000. Are those better? Not sure I want to invest $1800 or more in one. Last edited by sbartek1974; 02-18-2021 at 09:41 AM.. |

If you want to do miniature items, like D&D figures, then I am under the impression that a resin printer will be a better option. For these whale parts I think they would turn out great. Whichever you go with, it's a pretty good investment. There are a lot of parts you can print to repair things around the house. A couple of weeks ago I printed a broken latch on the vacuum cleaner. Without that part I would have had to buy a new one. I've also made some parts for my motorcycles, Jeep, vacuum cleaner, etc. More importantly I have a Sky Hawk for Classified Duke to fly around in, lol. I've also recreated dragonfly parts and just got an old fuselage to disassemble and recreate, like the original that has the thumb operated gimmick. Hopefully we'll have Scarlett in the air soon too.

An update.
Enclosed are a few first rounds of print just right off the printer without much cleanup. I'm using eSun PLA+ in Olive Green on the Hictop 3DP-ATL-11, along with Cura slicer v.4.8.0 in 'fine' print mode, with some tweaks. The shroud took about 6 hours to print. The cannon retainers, 1.2 hours. The cannon, 1.1 hours. All using tree supports. Not too bad on the shroud for a first print. I had to use a needle file on the mount that secures the shroud to the body so that it fit snug. On the first run of the shroud, I was off on the vane mounting holes by about 2mm. Corrected now and on to refinements... If anyone knows of a paint code that matches the original body please chime in. I'm sure I'll have to match it some, but it would be nice to start from a known baseline. Thanks for the comments and PMs. Once the designs are dialed in I'll put them up on cults3d and maybe thingiverse.

can I ask you what software are you using to model the parts? |

sbartek1974, I use an anycubic photon (less than $200 right now I think). But there is a newer better version the photon S that is $300 and much better and faster...but they have a small build area. I'm not sure I'd recommend a resin printer as your first printer though. They can be messier and maybe a little more finicky. But let me know if you have more questions about it. It's fun when you get it working well.

Hi Blackacre. I did a similar rehab of a whale. I modeled and printed similar parts for the main guns. For paint I used tamiya spraypaint. AS-6 Olive Drab. I think it matched pretty well. But it is a little flatter and a little more saturated/greener. But in person i think it matches better than the pics. I hope that helps and gives you a place to start. This is looking really great.

I can take photos of an object and then easily resize them to scale. So long as I have a micrometer and a reference point of distance I can then resize the canvass photo to be very close to the right size. The only thing that I seem to battle is the distance that you lose from perspective shot. You may lose a mm or two. But after a test run is done it's pretty easy to correct the dimensions if you need to.
