I recently picked up a used skystorm. I’ve always been interested in the kind of helicopter/jet hybrid tech that the toy is based on. I just don’t like the bendable helicopter blades gimmick on the toy. On mine, they’re all bent and one is cut short.
My plan is to replace the blades with fixed blades similar to the NASA experimental aircraft. And also seen in the concepts. I’d also like to add a longbow/awacs type radar to the top. Plus replace the front weapons since the connections are broken on my toy. Maybe give it a more asymmetric Apache looking sensor on one side gun on the other. I’ll tackle the blades first. I already pulled out the flexible ones and it looks like there’s plenty of room to add new pieces. |

I think I made some decent progress. I took a pass at the rotor blades, didn't like it and reworked the design. I'm really happy with how it came out. It has that half wing-half rotor blade feel. And it gives the Skystorm some much needed weight up top. Did I mention that I hate the rotor blade gimmick it comes with.
Any ideas on paint for the rotors? I kind of like grey and how it relates to the tail planes. But maybe black? I'd like to get some red or white stickers to add stripes near the end of the blades. Next will be the longbow radar type device that I'll mount in the center. I'm thinking I might not redo the cannons on the front but instead just repair the originals since they have a nice Gi Joe vibe. Last edited by Novacaine31; 10-06-2020 at 04:08 PM.. |

This is looking badass, man! A real boost for a shit show of a vehicle. Maybe think of what faction of the Joes is it going to belong in to give it some paint, especially being that of a NASA style flyer. The Rotors look fine the way they are. Just keep moving forward.

Oh dude that is AWESOME. No more wimpy rotors. That looks like it could chop down trees.

It looks fantastic. Makes we want to get one and attempt the same. If only i had the time and skills. I can't wait to see the finished result.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'm glad people are digging this. I also feel like the skystorm is a pretty weak vehicle with the spindly rotors but that it has potential. I made the Longbow radar attachment and I think it came out really well. It sort of just pops into that opening in the center of the rotor blades. And as a bonus it's a great way to spin the rotors when in helicopter mode. Now the Skystorm has some serious sensor capability for locking onto air to air targets as well as doppler for nap of the earth flight. I think it's striking a good balance between upgraded but still true to the original intended design. Still not sure if I'll rework the front guns. Also not sure about paint. I've been looking at some repro sticker sheets to add some more of a GiJoe toy feel to it when complete. Thanks again.

That looks great. Are you printing the parts yourself?

Wow this is turning out great. I have to say I always liked the fuselage on this vehicle but the rotor was just ugly as hell.
I see you're printing the parts. Can you share the models? I can finally consider grabbing one and do the same.

Thanks. Yes I'm printing them myself. Kind of a pain since the rotors are big and I can only print one at a time. But it is fun to modify these toys and make them the way I envision them.
Sorry Grippen but I don't feel comfortable giving away 3D files. I've had some bad experiences in the past and just want to have fun with this and not worry about anything. I hope you understand. I've cast my 3D prints in the past so maybe I'll make a kit for this mod at some point? But right now I'm just having fun and enjoying this. Thanks again for the compliments and for taking a look at this project. I'm still debating paint for these parts.
