Seriously great upgrade on the Skystorm, makes me want to pick one up myself.

Nice!
here's a tough project... who here can make durable crystal clear canopies? if the Skystorm canopy could be remodeled, sacrifice a few knots for better situation awareness, sit 2 joes in there like the dragonfly. I already remodeled the black seat insert to sit the pilot better. btw, the European versions have a blueish tint to the canopy instead of the clear, yellowish North American version. |

So I have a liquidator that has no canopy. I bought some clear resin that I've been meaning to use for a 3d print of a canopy but the project keeps getting put off. Modeling the canopy to fit exactly will take some effort. But I even got some buffing tips for my dremel and polishing compound. I'd love to make it a two seater. I did that with my dragonhawk.
But someone posted something about making an RC Mauler and all my other projects got put on hold My motors are supposedly on US soil but in customs or something.

What motors? KV gearbox? Any progress pics?
I have another SURPRISE mauler in the works... I saw what polishing that clear resin can do. It can look darn good. I sadly do not have the patience to deal with resin printers. Modeling the canopy perfect fit is the hard work indeed. If only we could afford some 3D scanner.. You know what other plane could look good with a sleek, clear canopy? The mudfighter! Today I was looking at the skystorm... what if we enlarge the lower fuselage with a cargo bay or something? Ok... enough distractions, I have some warthogs to finish! |

Yes the KV gearbox you suggested. Just waiting for all the parts. Right now I’m just printing the suspension for the mauler. My project maulers are busted up or missing those bits. I’m just going with a copy of the stock suspension. I’d like to try your spring version at some point. I’m also going to try rigging up turret rotation and adding a hatch to the turret. I think that’d be fun

not to hijack the sleek skystorm thread...
but.. nice! would you want my turret hatch files? I talked to a resin printing guru. the clear stuff yellows with age and gets brittle over time. might not be worth the effort. I used to do a lot of vaccuforming back in the day but no way I could get a proper toy feel with clean hinges. edges always end up janky. still, tempted to heat up one canopy to try to bulge it up more, stretch it a bit ... not sure how I can do this without deforming the mating edges though. was it Guy Cassaday who designed it? let's bug him! |

1) Brand of clear resin used. I generally use Siraya Tech for clear. Those that don't get regularly exposed to UV light (such as near a window) doesn't yellow much and I haven't had issues with it turning brittle. However: 2) If Siraya Tech gets a lot of UV exposure, it does yellow and also becomes a lot more brittle. 2 days in direct sunlight outside absolutely destroyed a clear little resin basket I had printed to hold some figure parts last summer. The items inside the house / away from the windows haven't had any real issues. 3) You can use clearcoat on clear resin parts to help protect them (as well as smooth them & make the part less frosted) but I haven't tried looking for a clearcoat specifically to protect against UV. Anyway, I guess my point is that I wouldn't write it off just yet....it's worth checking into different brands/types of clear resin as well as seeing if a few good layers of clearcoat will help mitigate those concerns. I'm not really doing much with the clear resin & Joe items, but I have made some Flash/Short Fuze clear visors and they seem to be OK for now. I think the size of 3D printing a 1-piece canopy would be a bigger issue just based on how small the build volume is on 3D resin printers. Last edited by Cryoguns; 04-01-2021 at 05:33 PM.. |

Very valid points.
Maybe the skystorm canopy is split into 2 or 3 sections then. Plan B is to find another canopy that could be fitted onto it. But seriously, there is something weird about the skystorm canopy. It’ looks sleek and fast, but it seems getting in and out of the skystorm is like stepping inside a casket. The rotor blades don’t even clear the heads of the joes nearby. Is it just me? |

Good to know. Definitely makes me want to try some test prints. I just ordered a larger format resin printer so I should be able to print a full canopy in one shot. As well as some Xperia entail mauler turrets as well...maybe?
The vacuform sounds promising. What about a 3dprinted “frame” that makes up the hinge, and edge of the canopy that is then mated to the vacuformed clear canopy. This could even allow for trimming to fit the frame and even some heating/massaging to fit the frame? This could also work with the 3d printed idea in that the glass bits might be replaceable. I think the skystorm suffers from being a larger craft in the concept art, that was then scaled down to barely fit one person. Similar to that 90’s Gi joe Apache that sort of fits 1 joe. Though it won’t go with the sleek skystorm design, I’d love to make a Russian hind helicopter type double bubble cockpit. That design is very metal frame intense. I’ve always been a fan of this look. Crimson guard variant
