—- Next I wanted to share about braided elastic. v54 Snake Eyes' hanging straps brought it to my attention, and I'd seen customizers use those for various things. I used a small pack of Dritz 1/8" black braided elastic for a much quicker solution to webgear in the following figure: For making leg straps holding gear (leg armor, hoslters etc) use the following steps: 1. cut the length you want 2. Apply a dab of superglue gel to the back of what you wish to attach, lay one end of elastic there, and then roll a wooden toothpick over the end of the elastic it to press it down onto the surface until the bond is strong (~20-30 seconds depending on the glue). 3. repeat with the other end of the elastic, so that the two ends meet on the back of the piece. Again, if you use a wooden toothpick, and keep it in motion, it won't stick and you'll save your fingers. 4. glue a piece of electrical tape down over both ends for extra strength. For the belt gear for this one, I taped a roll of electrical tape to itself (inner layer sticky side out and outer layer sticky side in, looped around braided elastic. Then I glued this loop to the back of the front of the armor belt. The ends of the elastic are glued to the inside of the back belt piece: This allows the belt to stretch to get it on and off: Last edited by ARBCO Avenue; 12-13-2020 at 11:52 PM.. |

Between the last two posts I've touched the surface on methods for making webgear. I'm looking forward to finding a way to extend 25th webgear for retro roadblock when he arrives sometime in the next month.

Wow, really cool tutorial! Thanks for sharing! With so many bins full of marauder & boss fight accessories now, I’ve been trying to not only use more parts in unintended ways but also to modify them a bit to get some unique looks so these tutorials are very enjoyable & helpful!
Never heard of braided elastic before and love what you were able to do with it! That trooper was such an awesome custom and I love seeing some behind the scenes on how you did his gear. Great job and as always, ton of cool stuff to see or learn in this thread!

Great job and as always, ton of cool stuff to see or learn in this thread! I had never heard of braided elastic either, and had to research it. Some customizers won't want to use parts other than plastics that come with a brand, and I don't disrespect that kind of purism, but for me it's just too fun not to make unique gear sometimes. Glad if you see some possibilities here and find any of it useful. That's what this thread is for! |

With or without Marauder parts similar to what you did / are doing, I love seeing the process, I think it gets everyone’s creative juices flowing and leads to some more out of the box thinking which is always fun to see.
Pretty much all of my early customs were just straight up Marauder builds but as I’ve gotten more comfortable doing customs & I get down to the more unique figures I need done for my ARAH run, now I’m grabbing parts from anywhere & making them from anything. Haha. Definitely makes it more interesting!

For my concept art project, I was looking forward to having a red ninja who didn't instantly look like a Storm Shadow repaint.
First, I cut the side locks off of Renegades Storm Shadow, and trimmed up/shaved down the overall shape a bit: Then added greenstuff to add bulk for the ears and also to smooth out some of the deep fabric folds. The paint on the forehead is my first attempt at paint matching, mostly washed off since it wasn’t right: Skin tone paint matching, take two: Final result suits me well enough, although the cloth opening isn't exactly what I was going for. Here it is, all painted up: EDIT: Adding in the webgear process pictures: step 1, cellophane step 2, electrical tape (sticky side out) step 3, one dab of glue to temporarily hold the vertical straps in place step 4-5, glue horizontal straps step 6, once dry remove the tape and cellophane. Some glue is still visible on the webbing, but this can be picked off under magnification, then painted over and sealed. Last edited by ARBCO Avenue; 12-22-2020 at 03:17 AM.. |

My Retro Roadblock finally arrived, and thanks to Germ's kindness I have 25th Roadblock webgear to modify.
Unaltered, the 25th webgear is about 5mm too short. Time for plastic surgery... I'm figuring the best bet to lengthen the straps is to cut out the smallest, least conspicuous undetailed parts of the lower straps and replace them with longer straps from other 25th webgear that I will carefully prepare for attachment. Measurements taken under magnification: Front right under the grenade is 6mm long, Front left is 10 mm long. Back right is 5.5mm long. Back left is 4 mm long. Each strap is about 1mm thick, give or take, and all except the back right are 2 mm wide. Planning ahead I will need to make beveled cuts at the top of the straps so there is enough surface area to glue. The bevels are pre-planned to reach 3mm farther up the back of the strap from where the cut starts in the front: Another view, after the cut. Again, the slanted cut gives over 3mm of surface area where the new strap will attach: Both front straps separated at the top: At the bottom, the bevel cut is too difficult. I've cut straight across. I'm carving grooves in the back of the belt for the new strap to attach to: Finished groove in the belt for the front right strap (top center of picture) Taking a pause for now: Source material I'm planning for the new strap segments: From 25th Comic pack Snake Eyes on the left, Retro Scarlett's on the right: All for now. Wish me luck... |

Yeesh! Props for the dedication. I have my Roadblock a night Viper web gear and called it a day.
Red ninja looks sharp. I need to get my hands on one of those renegades versions.

EDIT: I should have mentioned that the short length of webgear from the 25th era that Hasbro keeps reusing on new sculpts with longer torsos (50th Beachhead for example) has generated a lot of discussion for several frustrated customizers on here. Roadblock is just the current example. I keep hoping that some day I’ll develop a good enough webgear fix that casters will see value in reproducing it, although I’m sure they have limits in how much they can be bothered by people who constantly want things cast. Web gear is apparently a challenging item to cast successfully. Last edited by ARBCO Avenue; 01-10-2021 at 09:00 PM.. |
