I finally figured out how to get Blender to export the model with actual working texture. That was needless frustration and not time well-spent. For anyone out there struggling with the same issue, cycles (node-based) textures won't export. You have to texture in Blender render for exports to include textures.
Anyway, here's proof that Shapeways could read my textured file once I jumped through the appropriate Blender hoops: I'm going to try to pack a few heads and armor pieces into the same print and see how it prices out in the end, but I finally have serious signs of life!

Since I need to texture in Blender internal render mode, I'm not running the sexier cycles engine to make my renders on this helmet anymore so the images will look a little more cartoony than before. I spent some time today re-doing the UV map and updating my texture image file for some cleaner results.
Here it is, re-mapped and with the striping changed to red instead of white: Once I had that done I started to play with different colors. Arctic option: Standard version, but with blacked-out visor glass: Probably getting out of hand with the striping at this point... I need to add some more basic color detailing (cheek vents, for example), add some weathering/battle damage to the helmet, and bring in other attachments/components and armor pieces to texture along with the helmet but I feel like I'm getting a reasonably good handle on my process now (at least by my standards). It's starting to get fun.

Still tinkering...
I really miss Photoshop. Gimp just isn't in the same league and it's making this texturing harder than it needs to be. Still, can't beat the price!

Sign me up! I have one set of 4" ODST armor that someone cast years ago and I'd like to add some more troops using Marauder bucks.

With that said, if you're interested in a set of the parts as-is, I can PM you the link to the private listings for those parts.

Slow-going here... I did a few more UV unwrap iterations trying to find out how to better control the detail and color areas. I really need to get better at that step of the process.
Still, I textured the belly area of the vest, re-sculpted the rear and side panels (still in progress), and added some buckles above the chest plate: And here's how Shapeways renders it with full color:
