I haven't been posting much of my MTF-compatible Halo ODST armor project here on my thread since it's really just a MTF project I was inspired to take up, but this latest development seemed like it should get a posting here as well...
I was too lazy to set up a tripod, so...blurs happen: And with lower lighting: And with a flash just to show what's actually going on here a bit better:

Thanks! I still have a lot of refinement to do, but this was a proof of concept test and it's working pretty well for a first pass at it.

Thanks! I was pointing out the working flashlight built into the helmet though. That's my first pass at it. The illumination is weak in the photos, partly due to alignment troubles while shooting and partly because I can't get a decent shot in low light because I never learned how to use my camera and the auto settings are not suitable. I'll still suck at taking photos, but I'll also be tweaking my design and making a better way to attach the light for better light transmission with a larger cross section and more brightness. I'm using fiber optics to deliver light to just the opening of the flashlight so the whole head doesn't glow. This was just to see if my general idea would even work in practice, which it has. Yay!
My pie-in-the-sky idea involves more engineering and expense to try out, but I want to get the basics ironed out first.

Finally got around to my first test print of a replacement mechanism for the modern-era Skystriker's landing gear and wing sweep:
The main rack and the gear teeth all fit and moved pretty well for a first draft so I made a couple of tweaks where it was needed and I added the control knob on top so I can test out the position and size to get the best fit and functionality. That second test print is in process on the printer right now and should be ready by morning. This is phase one of an attempt to engineer separate wing sweep and landing gear controls for the modern version (just like I already did for the vintage one). Time will tell if that's a realistic goal or not...

Nice!!! How did you get the SS apart? I thought it was fused shut.

In the case of this particular bird, the owner chopped the engine rings away from one half of the body shell and I think the engines themselves have been glued in place (presumably to strengthen the engine rings). I haven't tried removing the engines (or paid them any attention at all, really) but they don't fall out. It seems to work well enough this way, I've just been reluctant to do any permanent mods like this on my plane. If you decide to go that route, I'd imagine an Xacto razor saw could make quick enough work of chopping the engine rings off. Anyway, I'll get some pics another day of what this plane has had done to it if I think of it.

Here is the dismantled 30th Anniversary Skystriker to show the areas that present a challenge during the first disassembly:
Here is the inside of the top half of the body shell: The engines turned out to not be glued in at all, just installed like normal so I removed them for the photos: This is the inside area where you can see where the engine rings were cut loose from the lower half of the body shell: And the white areas at the shoulders of the plane are where a small tab from the bottom shell was glued into the top shell: As you can see, the tabs broke off on this plane and remained in the top shell: And an overview of the bottom shell: You can see where the tabs connected to the bottom shell here, and there is also some glue around the edges of the shell itself: Close-up of the bottom shell at the shoulder area: And this is where the engine rings were cut loose from the lower shell: And the outside view: So, as I said, I dismantled my 30th Skystriker all of the way EXCEPT this final step of cutting the engine rings loose from the lower shell. It's perfectly doable though.
