Got a digital AH-6 and blew it up 400%
Haven't figured out all the pieces yet or if the scale is correct. But here is the Tailboom. And the Fortnite Choppa for sizing.

The pilot seated looks about right.
I think this will be completed in paper to figure out the size then use the printed pattern to make the parts in plastic and wood. With the fuselage I might fiberglass over the heavy paper because of all the rounded surfaces. The engine tail cowling and the tail boom.

The digital model didn't have much for internal structure.
Had to go back after the exterior skin was assembled and back fill. Unfortunately the fuselage is kind of asymmetrical. My excuse will be to offload the tailrotor during forward flight. This model was never intended to be built in the real world and it shows. There was no way for the tail to mount to the fuselage and then have the transmission cowling properly fit on top. Had to fiddle and trim with a hobby knife to make the space for the parts to fit. The interior aft compartment didn't fit and I almost tossed it. I will just have to draw it out from scratch since the part just seems to hover inside space with no mounting points. Think it is again not intended to be built and a function of blowing it up 400 percent.

The seats need to be lowered about 50%. The bulkhead shouldn't be solid. There is a pass thru behind each pilot about shoulder level. Edit: Here is what the cockpit bulkhead and seats should look like.

Going to have to decide to stay AH or go MH. After rewatching Falcon and Winter Soldier I am leaning MH so I can have John Walker hanging off the left side.

Sealed up the floor in the aft cargo compartment. One the aft bulkhead is installed I have a printed sheet of paper for the layer.
Built up the substructure for the cockpit with craft foam. Using craft foam has the advantage of adding weight to the nose. Now I don't have to support the tail to take photos. The nose is going to have a little more reinforcement before I install the struts and skid tubes. I still need to figure out what those are going to be made of. Included a 12 inch ruler so the size of the "little" bird is more apparent. Once finished, this is probably going to be the biggest aircraft I have for the Joes. Unfortunately, that is going to throw just about everything else off.

Something like these, I just grabbed the first one that popped up with the correct shape as an example, way cheaper options are available in physical stores usually: https://www.amazon.com/SONGMICS-Plas...f=sr_1_55?th=1 Last edited by sisco; 01-29-2024 at 09:41 PM.. |

Check the bed and bath sections of Walmart, Target, or other stores for Black Plastic coat hangers. Look for the cylinder shaped ones. If you cut the top off the bottom of the hanger is pretty much already in the shape of a helicopter skid. You'll want the fully plastic ones and not the sheathed metal ones. They are usually cheap and come in like a pack of 10 as well. They are meant to support heavy duty coats and jeans so they can take the weight of what you are building and they have a little flex to them similar to toy heli skids so they shouldn't break. You may already have some in your closet as well.

Thank you so much for the kind words of encouragement. I hope to pick up the progress again this weekend.

The black plastic hangers at Walmart are the perfect diameter for this scale helicopter and have a fair amount of flex if given to a child. The T tail is just held in place with a wire tie. Seeing her up on skids is a good sign that this might actually work. The struts are made from 2mm black polystyrene. Initially held together with superglue and then reinforced with 5 minute epoxy. The gear was assembled off airframe and then just slid thru the fuselage. After in-place the interior area was reinforced with bits of craft foam and coated with epoxy. The tail rotor gear box is assembled from parts of a used pen. Total cost of the project up to this point is $16. With some additional hangers in the closet now.
