I am working on a multi-purpose pylon for the Skystriker's wing glove hardpoints (weapons mounting locations). The spare missiles I printed for this are a bit rough and I haven't smoothed the support areas yet, so pardon the appearance:
I need to refine the actual shape and details. This was just a "proof of concept" design and it works pretty well. The Sidewinders (small) and Sparrow (medium) missiles fit on these pylons in either position. The right-hand pylon has its bottom peg located and angled specifically to work with my LANTIRN targeting pod design, but a plain 2-missile variant (or a redesigned LANTIRN with the slot rotated 45 degrees) will be available. I still haven't decided which direction to go. And as long as I am adding ordnance... The design here is, again, rough. I had to downsize the Phoenix missiles so I could fit them in around the front landing gear and I still need to find a prettier way to attach this rig to the plane, but I have the dimensions figured out pretty well and it's working as designed. Lastly, I have some reserve fuel tanks slowly taking shape as well... All together, I'm getting a pretty well-armed Skystriker ready to go here on long-distance missions.

I've tried finding an image of that online since you mentioned it, but without any success. Can you post a picture 'cause I'd like to see that.

I'm a few more iterations of the nose cone design into the process now. Here is the current result:
The fit is pretty snug and the contour lines match up reasonably well. There is still a little wave in the bottom that you can see from a side profile view, but it's not bad. If I can smooth that out I might call it a day on this design. Top view: Side view: Bottom view: And I have modified the external fuel tanks as well, but this print ran out of filament before it finished...

Looks really good Zap. Are you going to put any of these on Shapeways? Would make ordering easier. I really like the fuel tanks.
What is your vision re the under missile rack? Would you supply it with the smaller phonex missiles? Would you also add the original centre tank or would this need to be capped off somehow? I am loving working on the parts I already have from you. The ingenuity in design is first class. I enjoy just sitting and starring at them. Last edited by Highlander; 03-10-2022 at 02:45 PM.. |

I am loving working on the parts I already have from you. The ingenuity in design is first class. I enjoy just sitting and starring at them. The nose cone design is for the 30th anniversary Skystriker so that may not be much use to you. The fuel tanks still need detail work but those are close to being ready for release. As for Shapeways, if it's a part that requires mechanical function or specific dimensions, I always order test prints and make fit adjustments and buy reprints until I get it dialed in just right. I don't ever want to sell something that doesn't fit. The trouble is that Shapeways has jacked up shipping prices and print prices over the years to the point where I don't bother anymore. It costs a minimum of about $15 to test print even a small item. Most items on my Shapeways shop have $1-$5 markup that actually goes to me and Shapeways takes the rest. That means I'd have to sell between 3 and 15 units of a given item just to break even from one test print. Multiply that by however many revisions the design needs and it becomes a reliable way for me to lose money. So it's not that I wouldn't like to put new stuff on Shapeways, it's just that they have made it a waste of money to do it. With all that said, if you're OK with the risk of a poor fit I can put up a non-public listing for you to order fuel tank sets from. The belly-mounted Phoenix missile setup requires smaller missiles than the originals, so I would have to print those as part of a kit when the design is finished. I considered an option that would allow use of the original missiles but would require the front landing gear to be sealed up (so basically forcing a permanent gear-up display) but I'm not sure if that's worth doing. I could make proper Phoenix mounting pylons as part of that, but are people going to want to be forced into hanging their jet from the ceiling just to do it? Either way, I am figuring on just capping the original fuel tank mounting slot. Putting the original fuel tank back on would crowd the missiles way too much. I'll just sculpt a top onto the existing design so the old slot is hidden.

The fuel tank detail work is coming along. I'd say it's just about finished:
