I only have the patience for grainy 50-pass renders today, but I finished most of the detail on the limber itself now and I got a good start on the ammo box, which is a removable separate piece from the actual limber:
Just like with the cannon and its carriage, this limber and the ammo box are being modeled based on actual build plans from the mid-1800's so it's all as true to life as I can get it: I'm considering making the ammo box hinged and able to be opened. As always, the hinge construction is a hassle to tackle and is the only thing making me think twice about that feature. I also corrected the rims' offset from the hub for the limber's wheels while I was at it. I used to have the rims offset inboard rather than outboard. You can kind of see the old, inverted wheel cupping on the cannon's wheels in the second render above. It's something I've been meaning to fix for a long time but was just always set aside to be fixed "later." It's nice to tie up these loose ends every once in a while. It will be time to make a test print of the limber chassis very, very soon... Then I will finally need to clean up the cannon carriage body and ironwork for a good final print of the cannon. When I get that done, that will make one project I can check off the list once and for all.

Handles on the ammo box have been roughed in. I was dreading this part, so I'm glad it's over...

Awesome work Zap! Are those bearings in the wheels?

Thanks! The wheels are indeed installed with steel bearings. Just like with the wagons, these wheels are extremely smooth-rolling. It's overkill, but the bearings were cheap enough.
I'm updating the cannon carriage with its ironwork details right now and I'm considering a design change to the cannon itself to make installation onto the carriage easier. I also need to adjust the ammo box on the limber to add a working hinge and to make the box removable. I also need to get a fold-down prop designed for the limber's pole before I can consider that complete. Overall, I'm getting pretty close to finishing the "ground floor" of this project though. Adding a caisson, forge, or other alternate trailer later on will be easier to talk myself into once I have at least this pair of items completely ready to go. I suppose I'll need to get a handful of KP Troopers to man this cannon one of these days.

How did you print the tail fins??? The angle had to be tricky. They came out very nice!

Thanks! It actually wasn't tough to print. I just stood the stabilizer up on end for print orientation. The trailing edge faces toward the print bed (at an angle, not parallel) and the mounting surface with the tabs is totally vertical. I print with a raft to keep it from coming loose from the print surface. I have printed a total of three so far without any failures. So far so good.

I did some more work on the carriage irons today...
Just a few more key pieces of iron work and this will be ready for another test print.
