Not sure about the size yet, but my barrels have turned out pretty nicely. One version is "solid" and the other is open on one end and has detail on the interior. This is a set of 4 solids and 2 opens:
I may have gone a bit too thin on the walls of the open version. Light penetrates the walls pretty noticeably. It's hard to photograph the interior details, but here's my crack at it: I think I might try to make a removable lid for the "open" version which will need a bit of a lip to be added inside the barrel to hold it in place. I have some thinking to do on that. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with the results. The finish is just a bit gnarly on the bottom, but not terrible: A bit of scraping and wet sanding and I could have that looking much better. This is how it looks just straight off of the support material with no post-processing.

I don't do facebook either. I know I am missing a lot. I keep being told to go there. but I think the internet is more than just them.
I support hisstank btw. just my choice. if anything, If think anyone on the joe facebook groups should spread the word and join us here. just saying. Zap, what material is this? if Abs ,on the rough printed side I brush it with Abs/styrene solvent. sand, brush lightly, let dry repeat. I can achieve near polish finish surface with that elbow grease. if it is a recessed/ difficult area to reach, I sometimes leave a fat drop of solvent to soften the material and it settles itself in a friendlier surface over a few days.. other option is a quick heat stake , build a jig where you could flatten, maybe even imprint something. third idea is to do the bottom a separate piece for better detail. a bit of work to fine tune the press-fit snap. having the bottom edges a bit rough looks great. just thinking out loud, but darn these look good. Great job as always Zap! I been converting mortar defense 50 gal drums into functional drums. it is getting expensive. I would love to have disposable floating bright drums to re-enact the Jaws scene... Last edited by Joecollection18; 04-11-2021 at 12:41 AM.. |

I would love to graduate to ABS but the requirements for doing so have been more than I can accept. Building an enclosure for the printer is a relatively small nuisance I could live with, but since I print indoors at home, a ventilation system would be needed as well. That's just not practical for my situation.

ABS has many implications, health hazard, safety indeed. Needs proper ventilation and some filaments still degas, stink afterward etc..
I have good luck with a few brands, tinkering around for a decade now. It's an investment to build a carbon filter/ filtration unit so your output air is not contaminating the neighborhood, especially when printing in apartments. ( add fan noise to the list ) PLA definitely the easier, safer way to go. The reason I stick to ABS is the toy themselves are, and my method or working by fusing parts to another... unsuccessful with PLA so far. I use WELD-ON brand 2354 abs and styrene solvent. warning, this is industrial grade stuff. Methyl Ethyl Ketone. Available at industrial plastic suppliers. The tamiya thin cement is similar, less potent and so is the weld-on plastic welder cement bottle, available in hobby stores. I keep that stuff locked in a paint cabinet. Only a small glass jar filled with that stuff. Proper ventilation when using. it is very fast acting. I glue a wide base with a weight at the bottom of that bottle. a stupid accident results in a stinky spill with long headaches. Also careful, that stuff is like acid to precious toys and plastic surfaces... if spilled. I have not been successful with vapor smoothing. that's quite an art/ always been too late by the time I pull the part it is too late and gummy. I use a small brush and either thinly permeate the part, or make multiple thin passes as the solvent dries. I also use a thick coat that I massage with the brush. It is possible as the plastic "melts" to re-shape it. With experience you know not to over do it. when using too much it gets gummy and can take a few days to dry out. Used carefully and sparingly, this solvent seals the layers of a fdm part and prevent delamination. Some special abs filament ( with polycarbonate or other fancy stuff) do not react to this solvent. some PLA i used did work with it. it's really a matter of trying it out. |

Still working on the "bathtub" for the modern-era Skystriker:
I'm adding walls slowly around the outside, printing, testing, adjusting, and then moving further back so I can map out the available interior space. Once I finish doing that all of the way up and back I'm going to fill it up with as much detail as I can, finalize the position/pitch of the seats, and call it a (very long) day. There won't be much else I can do for it. For those of you who have been waiting and waiting for a 2-seater option, is the requirement that you remove your figures' lower legs to fit them in here a deal-breaker? I don't see any practical way around it, but I'm curious if this will even be a desired piece once it's finished.

P.S. there is no way I need $99 worth of items though for the sale :(
