It's getting closer. I still need to figure out the middle section of the base and add a bit of detail here and there and then this model will be good for a "static" version:
Once that's finished I will work on getting the articulation sorted out for a fully-articulated version.

The test print of my articulated array of monitors arrived today.
This is how it arrives from Shapeways: And for scale: Separated from the sprues: Assembly: And some posing (I did this before I inserted the pegs): And then I put the pins in most of the way (I need to do some work before I put them all of the way in):

Wow! Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm impressed that it works!

It's a bit tight with the print tolerances at this scale and to be honest it was more like assembling a model than putting a toy together. Which is to say, it didn't really "work" out of the box. I had to shave down a bit here and there and ream out the through-holes a bit to get everything together. I have some overall improvement to do with my articulation, no doubt, but I also think that realistically at this scale and with this material there will probably always be some manual cleanup needed before assembly. I am hoping to get it down to just a quick brushing (to remove un-sintered powder) and a hot water bath for certain parts for assembly (for the equivalent of "boil-and-pop") if I can refine my approach. If I can get to that point I will be quite satisfied and my articulated stuff will be more appealing and accessible to the casual enthusiast.

I love this, Zap. I'm working on a custom hostage rescue team with a support technical team. I bought a Bruder sprinter to be their mobile digital lab, and want to set up a surveillance style computer bank in the cargo bay. These will be perfect. I just need to find some other diorama pieces, but I could hand these from the ceiling or the wall and save a lot of space. Put me down as interested.

Well, this one took some time. Here is the exploded view of the articulated version of the robotic manipulator arm:
It ends up being 15 parts and 9-PoA by my count, but even the gripper fingers are supposed to be functional and poseable. If this works out as planned, it will have all of the range of motion of the real thing. I'll be ordering a test print in the coming week or two. Here it is all sprued and packed up for printing:

In any case, I am going to be revising the arm a bit for length and I'm thinking of making the middle arm segment shorter and linkable end-to-end with other prints of itself (so the arm will have a male joint on one end and a female joint on the other rather than the female-female setup in the current print). That way, more than one midsection can be used inline for greater control of the angle and overall length of the arm.

Cool idea! Would a larger array of monitors be useful? As in, more than 3? Would a piece that allows you to place one set of three above another set of 3 (to make a 3x2 array) be useful?

These look absolutely incredible. As one of those geeky data analytics professional types - double stacked bank of 3 monitors... tugging at my heartstrings just a little bit.
