Welcome to Hisstank! I just brought up Lexan as a more DIY option since it can be cut, drilled, and shaped easily with woodworking tools versus paying someone else to laser cut acrylic like the OP mentioned.

https://www.acmeplastics.com/acrylic-sheets It's strong stuff and there are a lot of places that will laser cut it to the specifications you give them. I don't have a laser cutter/engraver myself, but I wish I did.

Welcome! Thanks for taking the time to warn me. Fortunately, if I get Lucite I would be cutting it with conventional tools anyway, but it would have been a rude awakening otherwise.

I have been practicing my 3d modeling, and here is a concept I have worked out. It's a palm scanner, keypad, and RF card scanner combo for access control. Security is going to be tight in this building...
It is scaled to print at about 0.75" tall, 0.66" wide, and 0.25" thick and will, of course, need some painting to make the details pop. The "ACCESS DENIED" text is an embossed detail, though I have no clue if it will survive printing. If not, no big loss. If it comes out looking like the Shapeways render, it'll be pretty slick though. It is loosely based on this real-world design:

Thanks!
I got my Shapeways print of it in the mail and the detail held up very well: Hi-Def Acrylate and Frosted Ultra Detail...

Nice to see progress on this project again. Can't wait to see the scanners painted up.

Those look amazing! I may have to borrow that idea for the laboratory diorama I'm working on.
