How physically large is it? My printer can only handle prints up to about 4.5'' in each direction. If we're talking "pulled by a tractor-trailer" size, then I won't be able to pull that off without major surgery. But I don't mind polishing up the loose ends either way (though bear in mind I've got like half-a-dozen different printing projects going on right now, so it won't have priority ).

http://www.actionfigurecustoms.com/u...ank-GI-Joe.jpg these guys do some of the same stuff your doing and some of the rest you can get from mauraders gun runners site. I just bought a pile of sand bags from mgr for around $10. So you may want to work on stuff those guys don't make. I do like your designs, but their stuff is casted, so you don't have the layered 3d look.

Yeah, that would be too large for my printer. I don't mind taking a whack at adding hinges, etc. to the file if you want, but I won't be able to print it. That said, I'm strongly considering returning my printer anyways, and buying something larger. If I go for something fancier and larger than what I have now, I should be able to pull off a print of that size--and with better detail than my current printer.
Marauder's stuff is virtually all from the PTE line; it's the same stuff you can get from Big Lots. I buy a lot of it too because it's still extremely good for its price point, and--this is important--there aren't many alternatives; but, *as far as I know*, Marauder doesn't have a hand in producing any of it themselves. (I've been meaning to ask MJ about this for a while, though, but I haven't thought of a graceful way of bringing up the subject, so I haven't gotten around to it yet.) My goal is to surpass that level of quality, which I think can be done using 3D modeling and high-end 3D printing. (Note that I'm using a $350 printer, which I acknowledge doesn't produce the most impressive prints--hence I'm also showing off the renders as well for a point of comparison.) AFC's stuff is also not mass-produced, so it's comparatively expensive, nor do I see much variety in what they offer (I certainly don't see any mundane items like this). Yes, I do want to branch out into more exotic items, but I'm starting with lower-hanging fruit to get some experience. My plan is to eventually get my product cast too, using high-end 3D-print services to provide high-fidelity prints as prototypes, so the layered 3D-printed look isn't there; and, into mass production, so it's affordable. I just don't have the connections for casting or mass production yet, so I'm screwing around with what my printer can handle. Admittedly it isn't up to the task for what I need, so I may just buy a higher-end printer so my homemade prints turn out better. Eventually I'll order some of this stuff from Shapeways so I have something even more impressive to show off. |

On a more serious note, is it practical to print 1:18 chain link fence panels?

Ha ha, I can see what your opinion on the matter obviously is. In all fairness, I very well might. Long story short, after my last customer service interaction with M3D (for my 3rd defective printer), the customer service manager was kind enough to reset my purchase date to that of the most recent replacement, which means not only is my warranty extended, but so is my ability to return my printer for a refund. I bought the M3D printer because the small size and advertised print resolution seemed ideal for printing small objects, but it just doesn't have the precision necessary for small items, and the print space is limited, so larger items are mostly out of the question. Unfortunately, my ideal replacement printer is close to $4000 (with one I'd "settle for" at around $2000), so you can see why I'd be hesitant to make the change. Oooh, I'm going to say no, not with most printers. If you just want a generic mesh fence, then yes, that could work; but to get all the little knots and overlaps that give chain link its detail, you'd almost certainly need a printer that uses a dissolvable support material (see "$4000 printer", above). Otherwise that detail would be lost.

I cant think MagicWazard enough guys, but he sent me and my kids some samples of this amazing work and it IS INCRDDIBLE!!!
VERY awesomely detailed and realistic looking they have a nice heft to them, my sons love setting up forts and bases and this stuff has been in every adventure since we got it. The man realy is magic. The stuff I got was cast in a white sheen and so when the boys aren't using It I store it with my arctic team but it really does work fro any area. One great detail is the lid fits on the box and the barrel really tight and will stay on through play unless you WANT it to come off. Like I said I cant thank you enough man, great job on these!

@ WarinThefloor: Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad the stuff is working out for you and the kids. I've actually managed to improve the fit of the lid on the barrel significantly since the version I sent you, but I'm glad the one you got is holding up well.
Speaking of, I am trying as much as possible to build stuff that is reasonably sturdy, as I do want it to be able to be played with. Although I obviously want to make product that is detailed enough for collectors, I do want to make as much of this as rugged and kid-friendly as possible too. This is the sort of stuff I always wanted to have as a kid but never had, and I imagine there are other kids out there that would want stuff like this.

Well, my old printer is off to Refund Valhalla, so I can't do any homemade prints until I decide on another printer. The one I'm leaning towards is a couple months from release still (and God knows how much it's going to cost), so I may only be posting renders in the meanwhile, notwithstanding any prints I purchase from Shapeways (which I swear I actually intend to do in the near future).
With that said, here's a render of a new steel crate model I made, patterned after the ones from GoldenEye. It's the same size as the wooden crate (2.5 feet square). The lid is removable. The side patterns are pretty much spot-on with the game's textures, and I like the modified grid pattern on the underside, but I wasn't really sure what to do with the top. In the game, it's the same texture/pattern as the sides, but I wanted to make it something unique; I didn't know where to go with it, however, so I just messed around, and what you see is what happened. I'd appreciate some feedback on what to do with the top.
