Well, unfortunately, I plan to eventually try to make some money off my designs--some of which are more elaborate than what I've shown off so far--so I don't have any plans on sharing model files. Most likely I'm going to put some of this stuff up on Shapeways until I can figure out a way to get them produced affordably.

Anyways, I tried making a quick-and-dirty version of the M2A1 ammo case. It's a pretty crude model (I didn't even remember to model the carrying handle!), but for better or for worse, not much of the detail I DID include (like the front latch) carried over to the printed version. It's not awful, but it's a bit bland. I need to re-do the model from scratch anyways, so I'll exaggerate the features on the newer version a bit so they carry over better. (Also, silver table is silver.)

Well, my 3D printer has broken down again, so I'm not able to print anything else out at the moment. (A word of advice: if any one of you is contemplating purchasing an M3D printer, BUY THE WARRANTY, FOR GOD'S SAKES!) So instead, here's a couple more renders of 3D-printable stuff. At least I can keep busy with modeling while I get my printer repairs sorted out, and give you guys something to look forward to.
Here's the render of that quickie M2A1 ammo can I built that I showed off in my last post. I'm not really proud of this one, and I fully intend to improve this model, but I figure I might as well show it: Cinderblock, with rough stony texture applied: Note that I intend to apply this stony texture to the sledgehammer as well. EDIT: Here's that sledgehammer. Again, the handle is still pretty simple. I have an idea on how to spice it up, though. A rifle case, which opens up to hold a medium-sized weapon: Note that I haven't yet figured out how to build out a working hinge just yet, but I think I have a good idea on how to get it constructed. Either way, I'm also going to put "feet" on the bottom of the case so that it can stand on its bottom, even with the working hinge implemented.

Built a couple new models while I'm waiting for my printer repair to sort out:
A first-aid kit. It doesn't open--it's a little too small for that, and there isn't much you could possibly fit in there anyways (...for now...). It's intended to be a prop, rather than functional; if I hollow it out, it'll be just to save on material usage. BUT, that's not to say that I couldn't potentially make a hollow *opening* one in the future. Odds are it would have the bendy "living hinge" found on most small opening cases, which is something I don't think can be achieved by any 3D-printed material. A sci-fi floor lamp, about 5 feet tall (at 1:1 scale), which an interchangeable bulb. You can pull the semi-spherical "cap" off to remove the bulb. It's shamelessly modeled after the floor lamps found in Doom. I thought the textured bulb looked cool, but I'll probably also create a smooth version for those that prefer it. Made some progress on my M2A1 ammo can. I still don't have the top carrying handle, and I haven't yet joined all the parts together, but I think it's nearing completion. Anyways, I'm starting to upload all my stuff to Shapeways, because I want to get some high-quality test prints of everything. I don't have anything available for sale yet, though. I'll probably make some of the simpler stuff available before very long, but anything that has parts that fit together tightly won't be available right away, since I need to order test prints for myself to ensure the tolerances are OK before I sell them.

Got the M2A1 ammo case done. I also plan on making an "open" version of the case with an exposed "belt" on a tab that can attach to certain weapons to feed ammo.
Hopefully the little details come through when printing. This was a bit more of a pain in the @$$ to build than I thought it would be at first.

Got my printer back, and was able to make a few new prints.
I started off with the revised M2A1 ammo case model. Unfortunately, my printer isn't precise enough to retain the fine details, but at least the handle is visible. Oddly, the white one turned out better than the silver, despite (or perhaps because of) the fact that I printed the silver one at a higher print resolution. I'm guessing the X/Y precision is to blame...finer resolution means more layers, and more layers means more possibility of X/Y discrepancies. Blah, blah, here's the pictures. This one didn't turn out very sharp, but at least it provides a size comparison: Next, the first aid kit. My original print turned out much smaller than I expected; I obviously low-balled the dimensions. And of course when it came to printing the carrying handle, my printer basically said "lol" and didn't. So, I blew the model up to 150%, and the size was basically perfect; unfortunately, the carrying handle broke off with little more than a sideways glance. At least the latches are still visible (even the feet, on the larger one!). And here's a couple size comparisons of both versions. Again, they didn't turn out very sharp (damn 11-year-old camera and poor lighting!!). Lastly, the Doom-inspired light column. This one turned out comparatively better simply by virtue of not having enough fine details to screw up. BUT, I had to spend a bunch of time (don't even ask how much) sanding the various parts to fit together, since my printer's precision isn't the greatest and the tolerances I built in weren't enough. Plus my printer has some backlash issues, so the parts are slightly oblong rather than perfectly round; they only fit together when aligned just so. The seam down the middle is not in any way intentional. And a size comparison: And here's the sprite I based it on, next to the player character. It's not intended to be 100% faithful, but close enough that you'll know what you're looking at if you're familiar with the source material:

I have an *.obj file I worked out for 3d printing an intermodal shipping container in 1:18 scale. It would need some work to finalize like adding pegs and holes to join the panels and making a working hinge mechanism for the detailed doors (I put it into a couple of online printing websites' systems and got sticker shock on the price so I never refined the design for functional use) but I think most of the heavy lifting is done. Any interest?
