I got my wooden crate re-printed in a new dark silver material, as well as a revised version of my 55-gallon drum:
I've also got a round fixed-leg table (a sort of "bar-style" table") which is comprised of two pieces--the "leg" and the tabletop. The fine details from the 3D model don't quite come through using my personal printer, but it overall does the job. I want to get this printed in the darker material soon too.

If anyone is interested you can get diorama drawings for many things on thingiverse and just go to a makerlab to get it printed out. There are places all over the country that let you pay to print objects. The price might not be the best but some unique things can be had.
Search Thingiverse - Thingiverse You can resize the scale a 3d printer prints at so things that are not 1/18 scale could easily be changed. The warhammer community uploads a few things for this. This will be the future of customs in the not so distant future. There are also ways to get the 3d objects looking more smooth, and you obviously can sand and paint the finished pieces. |

I really like the silver material stuff MW, it looks real nice and likely wouldn't need painting to pass as some alloy. Man I wish you would just send me a big bag of your scarp pieces! I bet I would be plenty happy, the boys would love to play with the random fodder that you didn't think met your standards because based on what you are saying here your stuff looks REAL good and I bet the stuff you toss aside is plenty good for kicking around playing

Obviously mass production is not in my immediate future, but I figure I may as well show off the stuff I'm working on in the meanwhile. And like I said, there's a decent chance I'll wind up posting some or all of it to Shapeways for those who don't mind paying the cost. Yeah, I really need to learn about painting. Not just for the sake of these prototypes, but if I wind up getting this stuff mass-produced, they're going to need paint masters. If anyone can direct me to a good source of information for painting for noobs, I'd much appreciate it. Quote:

Nice stuff you got there. Do you know of printers that can achieve a smooth surface? I'd like to get one someday but would want to avoid printers that can only do pancake looking prints. I'd love to be able to print some larger parts for custom vehicles.

I had a co-worker who had the Zortrax M200, and that thing could print as smooth as silk. Of course, that printer runs nearly $2000, and my printer cost me $450. So, you know, even if you compare raw specs, sometimes it's a classic case of what you get being a matter of what you're willing to pay for. My "dream" printer would probably be the Zortrax Inventure (dual-nozzle extrusion with water-soluble support material!), but that thing is about $4000, so I'm understandably hesitant to dump that much cash on it. Even then, the print software is also a factor--the print software has to "slice" the model (divide it into logical chunks) to determine the most efficient way to print. Some print software does this better than others. Some companies do nothing but produce print software for use with other printers that boast improved slicing and optimization compared to the OEM software. So buying 3rd party software can actually improve print quality even from a mediocre printer, just by improving how the model data is sent to the printer to be printed.

These are awesome!!! I have a ton of items for my PITT / base dio I'm planning. Would love to get my hands on a dozen crates, cones and fuel/oil drums. And about two dozen of the cinder blocks and dragon teeth.

Some people use acetone to smooth the printed objects. It's a very strong chemical and like 3d printing really needs proper ventilation. You know acetone by its common name of nail polish remover but pure acetone is potent and strong.

A couple of previews of stuff I am working on: K-Rail, or Jersey Barrier. The core model is pretty complete, but I need to hollow it out from the underside (so as to conserve material usage), create proper attachment points for the hooks, increase the size of the top hooks (I want to share the same ones as used with the dragon's tooth), and set it up for a displacement map (to give it a concrete texture). I hope to maybe have a print by this weekend, though probably not with all the bells and whistles. Sandbag: this features a displacement map to create the burlap texture. The texture is kind of exaggerated a bit to compensate for how small the object would be. I've tried printing these out on my home printer, but the results aren't really worth showing off (at least not with unpainted white plastic). Plus, due to the lack of flat bottom surface, I need to print it in halves, hope the halves are flush (they never are), and glue them together. I'm going to try one in the dark silver material soon just to see if the texture carries through. I get the feeling this is going to be a Shapeways-only model for a while, though. And although I don't model weapons as often... This needs a little bit more work in a couple places; the handle is still a bit blocky (not that it would be obvious at 1:18 scale), and due to the construction method, the sights get culled if I try to upload it to Shapeways at 1:18 scale (the sights are simply attached shells, rather than Booleaned onto the model to make them a contiguous part of the mesh; Netfabb apparently doesn't like that when the shells are very small). Also, it's WAAAAY too small for my printer to handle (I've tried).
