Looks good! Looks like you'll have a good amount of freeboard to the hangar/main deck. What is your plan for the hurricane bow? Are you using the original, or fabricating something yourself? The original looks like it flares too drastically to fit the lines you have going.

I'm glad you asked. That's what I've been working on for the past few days. I has been a little tricky thus far. First up, I wanted to square off the flight deck a little more at the bow, and eliminate the overhang . I had to figure out how much space to leave between the flight deck and bow section in order to get the correct slope . Thankfully I have a few bows, so I'm building a prototype on the bench first. To match up the lower flare I ended up having to cut down some of the freeboard going aft a couple of feet. It's still going to take some more sizing up , but I think I have a good idea how to make it look real nice. I have tons of photos of all 4 museum ships on my iPad that I'm constantly looking back at. I have noticed that Intrepid and Hornet have different bows than the other two. Not sure if it was the same on all of the CVS conversions or just some. I also noticed some distinct differences on the Lex that are not the same on the others. My bow will be like none of them. Lol, that's the beauty of building her as the CV-35 . who knows what modifications would have been made if she was ever completed and had a long career as well . I will have to relocate the anchors a bit lower Right now they are a deck too high. I found a nice 3d internal drawing of the anchor windlass machinery . Looks to me like they come out just below the main deck. As is the case on the battleships .
This photo was before I cut a good amount off the top . I cut off about 2 inches off, 2 different bows. Right above the bullnose. With the resulting slope , it will now extend out to the squared off flight deck which now has a two inch "box" below it. Those two inches on top of the existing 2" at the gun sponson will make it the proper height for a man standing on the sponson. (Which I may also relocate) The Cat walks extending fwd will be attached to either side I will take more photos soon. Easier to explain that way Last edited by SCB 125; 02-07-2015 at 10:11 PM.. |

Nice work! The windlass motor room is located on the 3rd deck with the actual ground tackle (wildcats, stoppers, controls, etc) located on the main deck foc'sl in the hurricane bow.

Salvaged the cut off pieces . Attached them together to be placed around the forward deck edge. Web framing will connect these to the cut down bow section . Now to fill the seams and extra holes , trim , and sand . May repeat same with the leading edge, or might construct something new. I kind of wanted to include the forward conn station port holes .

I was about to mention the secondary con. Nice! The difference in the bows of the converted Essex class, had to do with the SQS-23 sonar dome installed on the carriers assigned to anti-sub warfare (ASW). The SQS-23 sonar dome jutted downward from the forward end of the keel. There was concern when anchored of the ship overriding her chain and damaging the dome. That's the reason for the centerline anchor. It was supposed to be a better lead.
You wouldn't happen to have any spare island hatches would you? |

What can you (or anybody) tell me about bridle catchers ? I've researched this topic a little , meaning I know what they are for . I know when they stopped installing them on new hulls , and when they were removed from current fleet units. For my purposes, I see that of the remaining Essex Class ships, only intrepid, Lexington (and Oriskany) have them. The Midway does as well . As far as I know, all of the SCB-125 Essex. had C-11 cats. I've read about how different aircraft attach to the cat shuttle, and associated gear . I'm trying to understand what differences exist for ships that otherwise have the same catapults and operate the same types of aircraft. Was it a modification to the existing cats that eliminated the need for these? Or? Also: any insight into the differences between the C-11 and the C-11-1 ? I see that. The C-11-2 is shorter in length , and were used as waist catapults on the Midway, and FDR . All I see about the C-11-1 is that the Oriskany had them , and they were "more powerful". Just a curiosity of mine. To keep it pertaining to this forum, I'm trying to decide whether to put bridle catchers on my Custom USS Flagg ! Last edited by SCB 125; 02-10-2015 at 06:50 PM.. |
