Yes, I do have a game plan for the island structure. Originally I was going to use the Flagg's. I changed that to enlarging the Flagg's island. Finally, I decided to go with all new construction using styrene and PVC for the framing and skin. The structure will be built using the basic proportions from an actual Essex Class carrier, only the interior will be altered for 1/18 scale figures. They did this with the Flagg, sort of. The interior compartments will be arranged roughly according to the plans. Two or possibly three levels will be omited however. This will be done in order to have an Island that is consistent in scale with the rest of the ship, but have spaces that are tall enough to fit 4" figures. I will also reduce the footprint of the uptakes space (smoke stack) to allow the rest of the spaces to be larger in the fore-aft direction. The interior will be highly detailed, lighted, painted, and marked according to photos that I have collected from the 4 remaining Essex Class carriers, as well as the USS Midway. The Lexington and Midway specifically because these two ships saw service through the 1980's. This is the time period the will be depicted here.

That's awesome! So, are you removing the sections above and below the red lines?
The towers basically look the same on the Essex class, which the USS Flagg was based on the Intrepid, but it looks to me like the radars are kind of different. Any plans on the radar/antennas? As an owner of a USS Flagg playset, I am loving this custom project! Jason |

I plan to remove the decks that have the red lines through them. The radar antennas that are visible in the drawing are the "dish type" antennas on top of the two MK-37 5" gun directors. Those will not be included because there will be no 5" guns in the ship's armament. The forward one will be replaced with the Phalanx CIWS aka: R2D2. I have not yet decided the location of the second CIWS unit. The other radar antenna in the drawing is for SPN-35 approach radar, (Dome) As is on the Flagg, this will be included. (The Dome anyway)
The other Flagg radar antennas will be replaced with these: |

I took these photos about a month ago. I have been meaning to post them, but I've been so busy, I haven't had a chance til now. It is already time to take more pics to show the progress since these were taken!
Updates consist of continued work on superstructure framework, initial installation of #2 elevator machinery, work progress on port side gallery deck (angle deck area) I rigged up the pneumatic cylinder, slide block, 2 cables, and a single sheave at all points in order to test the system. Eventually there will be 4 sets of 4 cables (16 on each elevator). The test went well. I just received the 12vdc 120 psi compressor that will be built into the ship. Next I will build a pair of air receivers out of PVC pipe. The system will be set to operate between 85 and 105 psi. In order to get the elevators to move at a realistic slow speed, I have the flow rate dialed down to a trickle. I am hoping that the increased air pressure will stop the ram from "jerking" along. This was happening when I was using 50 psi at that very low flow rate. As mentioned before, I decided to place the machinery just under the flight deck. Mine is similar in arrangement to carrier center deck elevators as opposed to having the machinery below deck like actual deck edge elevators are. The other, most visible progress area is the gallery deck on the port side. I plan on having this interior area fully accessible via a removable flight deck panel. This section will be fully detailed with compartments, doors, passageways, and equipment, as will other parts of the gallery deck. Unlike an actual carrier, my gallery deck will not continue over the hangar space. It will be like a saddle, riding over the Hangar with compartments on either side. I had to make this trade off to have enough clearance in the hangar, but also have a gallery deck. When finished it will be made to appear that it runs all the way across. Only at the elevators will it be obvious. Here you can see the amount of overhead clearance on the gallery deck, and level of the flight deck SOMEONE please tell Shipwreck that this is a Hard Hat Area! Saftey First! Here you can see an example of how the interior spaces are layed out. Because of the scale difference, I won't have this many compartments, but you get the idea Last edited by SCB 125; 01-17-2016 at 08:59 AM.. |

As seen above I used home made beams cut from PVC stock for the gallery deck sub-structure. I will use these in places where the support work won't be seen. On the other hand, I have used the much more expensive Evergreen/Plastruct 1/2" x 1/4" I beam in spots that are visible. An example is under the many overhangs that jut out at the gallery deck level, and in some cases the flight deck. Although the beams are not arranged exactly like those on the USS Intrepid, they are close enough. The beams are functional as well as for aesthetics. I used a basic grid pattern for the I beam, joined together with pieces of 1/4" angle styrene. The deck on top of the beams is 1/8" PVC foam board, as is the skin of the superstructure. When all of the skin is in place it will be clad with .5mm styrene and detailed with pipes, rivets, portholes etc.

Your I-beam substructure followed by the actual pic of the carrier structure blew me away. This build is just amazing, but that pneumatic system... Wow.

I have to say this about your Flagg... Not only is your detailing beyond impressive but it looks like a model built for a museum. Great job!
