I have always wanted to do a sub. The big MEGA BLOCKS CUTAWAY view of the SEA WOLF was just one of my all time favorites. After seeing what the new TRUE HEROES/SOLDIER FORCE/CHAP MEI sub looked like, I wanted to really try and do a submarine. I purchased a cement cardboard tube at HOME DEPOT and got planters today. The conning tower is a Rubbermaid holder for cereal--they come in a variety of sizes, I was going to do an ICE STATION ZEBRA thing with the conning tower coming out of the ice, but I said why not go balls out and go for the big one. I did this on my phone and cant get the other pic to download, but its a 4 foot long tube, figure 1.5 foot on each end with the planters, so about 7 foot. I want to get another 4 foot tube and make it longer. |

Thanks. Next is to get another tube and then start on a cutaway view on the port side. Time to sketching up an interior.

This is really cool Skipper; I have been waiting for someone to tackle a large scale sub.
You can probably get a nice acrylic half dome for the nose of the boat from Plastruct... |

Thanks, great tip, just figured Id hunt down a plastic bowl with the same diameter as the base of the planter. I plan on making two hinged panels that can open and show the inside, I think Im only going to go with two decks--dont want it too tight. SONAR ROOM---COMM---BRIDGE--AFT MISSILE---REACTOR-PROPULSION BOTTOM DECK TORPEDO---MESS HALL---??????---AFT MISSILE(BOTTOM)-REACTOR CONTROL--ENGINE ROOM Not sure what else to put---back hatch and replace one of the rooms with a hyperbaric entry for SEALS? Not sure where to to. Im getting the second tube today and black wrapping paper (stead of paint--quick easy--no fumes/wife hates paint) and red wrapping paper for making the red on the bottom section. Also have to go to hobby/art store for hinges. The diameter of the hull is about 14 3/4 inches, Im hoping to find some of those cardboard circles in party fair to cut slits into and then insert foamboard and see how that goes, it should keep everything well supported. Anything else comes down to what greebles I can find to do it up. I want to go balls out on the bridge(this will take time) but as long as I can find pieces to put in, Im good. Should be able to get a large amount done today. The back fins and covered prop Ill probably find today as well, Thank you God for dollar stores. Any tankers that served or sub fanatics, lmk if there is something I might want to add. Just want to make it look legit. By the by, the opposite side will have the proper markings and the conning tower will have that slope to the front just like the real one. |
