To all the Navy 'tankers on the board, I invite you to provide input for my latest venture project, upgradeing a GI Joe USS Destoryer toy into a somewhat action figure usable vehicle/ playset.
Way back in '93 I had ideas for new vehicles for GI Joe, a C-130 and a battleship. I took my idea to the JoeCon in '93 to the Hasbro reps and was quickly shot down. Fast forward several years later, and a few things came out although not 3 3/4 inch specific design, they were large enough compaired to GI Joe USS Flagg; the USS Destroyer and the USS Tiger Shark. Now these toys were part of the line of Tonka like vehicles that came out in 2003 or so with motors and lights and sounds. Both of these vehicles were about 3 feet long and I thought they would look cool along side the USS Flagg. I figured a couple of the destroyer ships and one of the subs woud make a carrier strike group (CSG). At one point I used to own a USS Flagg, but had to let it go along with all of my vintage stuff in the early 2000's. Recently, I have come back to Joes with the launch of the 25th line and really got into it with the Rise of Cobra stuff. Today I was fortunate to win an acution for an used USS Destoryer toy that had all of its pannels and was in decent shape (at least for custom work). I figure I will start small and work my way back to the fleet with the carrier as the crowning jewel when I can afford it again. So for the project in hand, I notice the modern destroyer deck does not look like the toy's profile. The ones I was looking at has a single gun in front and a helo pad on the back, with the island command deck flat with windows simular to the island on the Flagg, and frame mast and smoke stacks. Below deck, I was planning on gutting out the rooms replace them with a command briefing room, maybe keep the egine room. At this point I would like to open the floor to experts and seek your advice. Enclosed is a picture of the USS Destoryer I won off of e-bay. (Edit: Replaced that photo with the Computer model in progress for the thumbnail update)

I just won this, so I don't have this in hand yet. I tried looking up this toy on google to see figure to ship scale, but came up with nothing. I know this will not be in true scale seeing that the Flagg should be 62ft long to be true scale. I am hoping to get a little dio/ play value out of it with the new ME figures. I figure I would have to make a new bridge, get rid of the rocket thing, and get rid of the front cannon. I was thinking, one of the white single barrel cannon from the Flagg would do for the bow cannon. By removing the rear rocket thing, the stern area should be able to support a Skyhawk or maybe even the ROC Dragonhawk. I also want to put depthcharges as one of the weapons this will carry.

Enclosed is a picture of the USS Destoryer I won off of e-bay. PATROL BOAT - http://www.shopping.com/Elite-World-...arine-PBR/info OR Small Spec Ops Rubber Boat - http://www.toy-superstore.co.uk/prod...ducts_id=23967 Something like that would be cool, not something a Destroyer does BUT adds mega play factor. The forward Hull looks like it has a large hole in front. I'd FILL that and put the 2nd CANNONS there. IF you can get or make the 2nd set of guns you put those where the hole was, using PVC Pipe as the swivel base part. The first guns leave in place BUT RAISE THEM by cutting a piece of PVC PIPE to the height you want, and EPOXY that to the original CANNON BASE which I am sure swivels. Now you have 2 sets of fairly accurate Destroyer Cannons. TRY NOT TO MURDER THE ORIGINAL ISLAND! If you can get it off nicely and in one piece that can be used as the top of your NEW ISLAND that you build, or at least parts of it can be used. So dont outright trash it, it has enough defining lines to be reused. I mean hey I see 3 windows that should be Joe Scale Windows right under the 2 Steam Ports. Leave the Anchors... cool little effects. If I think of more I'll let ya know :-) Last edited by jpdraven; 04-08-2012 at 10:06 PM.. |

I think that boat's scale is smaller than you think. You might be better off making it like the boat in apocalyspe now. Its way too small for a ME size fig to be a destroyer.

Here's what I've found in my research. It's a GI Joe Motorized Destroyer (USS Destroyer) made by Hasbro in 2004. It's about 35" so it will need a lot of work to make it work for 4" figures. The figures it came with originally look like 25mm figures.
There's some more info at the links I found. GI Joe Destroyer GI Joe Motorized Destroyer Battleship ship in original box |

Thanks for the replys so far. I know its hard to speculate on something that I do not have in hand yet. Scale is a big issue, but I feel confident with this thing being 35 inches (just shy of 3ft), I think there is some potential here. Initially, I have been looking at the guided missile destoryer classes for insperation. I do like the idea of keeping the island and adding it as a topper piece. I figure I can raise the island an inch or two for figure useage and then cap it off. I did a photoshop concept idea of what I was thinking it would look like. This will have to do until the toy arrives and propper pictures can be taken. Please note that some of the parts fused with the photo may not be in scale with the toy.

I think you'll have some good ideas when all done. As far as the forward gun goes.... you could always do like the old German U-Boat Subs had, a single firing cannon that you could have a gunner's seat attached to. There are so many possibilities here man. Looks like the Island is the biggest problem here. I'm almost thinking of completely getting rid of the Island, and then as 46 Zone said, converting this into more of a patrol boat. The only sad thing is PTE/True Heroes has some INSANELY COOL patrol boats on the market right now, that with a simple repaint in NAVY GREY would make perfect Patrol Units. Why not make this the Sub Hunter Killer that a Carrier Fleet has at it's disposal? They're smaller, sleek, fast, and armed specifically with hunting subs in mind. If you do that then you can use the opening read door as Torpedo Tubes, can still add depth charge station(s), and have a forward cannon, without sacrificing too much. As far as the Island goes..... still have to recreate something to make it work, BUT if done right this can be VERY VERY cool in the end. Remember..... this is just the "shell" or the foundation. Once you have the foundation defined the sky literally is the limit dude! ;-) |

Ok, doing some research.
I have a clear plan for this now, I am going for an Arleigh Burke class Destroyer. It has a different length to beam ratio, making it wider at the beam so not as long as traditional destroyers. fire power is One single 5 in gun, 2 CWIS guns, and versious missle ports on the boat. I figure I only need space on the bridge for maybe 3 figures. Now the interesting part of this is making the island removable, exposing a playset of the ships CIC, where the Captain of the boat conducts battle operations. This is located inside the hull of the ship. So overall, the scale is not really compromized as much. These types of ships do not have a huge crew on deck presence compaired to traditional destroyers. Some things I would need to do is rework the bow to make it more wedge shape, bring the blunt end to a point on the bow. I also need to square the stern end for the landing pad. I can lengthen the boat here by doing that. I think I will still make it possible to access the controls from the stern. Here is a pic of the Arleigh Burke class destroyer: Again, keep in mind this little project is not ment to be an exact model of a paticular ship and the scale of the boat is not entirely figure scale, more so in scale with the USS Flagg toy. Again, thanks for all the input so far, it is really helpful with the design phase of this project, I can't wait for this to arrive now.
