i'm already thinking of the next one ;) won't tell just yet but it will be a first for me.
ok, spent a good 6 hours masking today and finished all the base line mask work. i'm trying something new on this one as well. i'm going to outline the pattern areas with a thin line of burgandy. this will make it much easier to terminate the pattern on panels vs. a whole jet wrap. if i don't like the way it looks, i can always pinstripe it over with black. i'll find out when i pull the mask tape off. i'm also going to make the leading edges of wings and flaps solid black. i did the leading edge thing on my CG Rattler and liked the way that turned out so decided to do ti again on this. the normal vehicles of mine then to have a solid underbody and this one is no different. the jet engine bays will however remain black while the rest of the main body remains burgandy. i'm still debating if i want to change that up on the engine bays from front to back. that may be a bit too much black. overall, this is going to look much darker than my previous PP vehicles with much more black but being a jet, i thought it more appropriate really. also realized that if i want to ghost the wing stripes on, i need to extend the wheel again so i can line up the masking. it was a bit of a chore to get the wheels out again but managed to get them out without tearing the masking tape on them which was nice. i prepped the wings with the outlines. just need to add the ghost stripes then patterns.

finished the wing stripes. my rationale for this is that they are stolen/captured joe vehicles to begin with so some of the basic markings remain but are now incorporated into the new PP treatment of the vehicle. when done, these wing stripes will be burgandy.

Masking looks great.
I must have missed something because i am trying to figure out what the paintscheme will look like eventually. I know from your other customs that you'll be applying the scale pattern with alternating lines. Is there going to be another set of colours applied after masking this red stripe pattern right now? And then masking off more of that before adding the scales? |

i build off a base layer of burgandy. tape off all areas i want to remain burgandy. i then come in with a black coat which will cover all areas left exposed. after this is completed, i put the silver highlights on and then pull all the masking off leaving the burgandy/black pattern with silver highlights. anything else is either done by hand at the end or masked off and done separately at the end. it's important to get this layer right as i can't go back and add burgandy without it being very difficult. it's very easy to touch up with black or any other colors but i generally get one shot at the base color and any pattern lines i want to be burgandy in color. you have to be able to visualize the layers and what the final outcome will be for this to work correctly.
i'm hoping to get all the masking done this weekend as it doesn't hold well for long periods of time and some of it has already been sitting for a week. last thing i want it to hit it with black and have the mask tape slide around or peel off. thats why this could easily get very mess quickly. it just takes patience and skill in getting the masking down tightly and evenly. other simply cover with a jersey mesh which i'm sure is 100 times easier and can look just as good with skill and patience. i've been painting RC car bodies for a decade using this method so this is what i use, for better or worse. has anyone ever clear coated a vehicle? i typically use an acrylic on rc bodies. an old trick is to use future floor polish which is an acrylic polish that gives you a durable glossy coating. the difference is this: or this:

the average small vehicle will take me at least 20 hours to complete. most of that is making. i actually did the PP pattern on a 1:28 scale RC car and THAT was tedious. it's tiny by comparison.
joe vehicles are much larger but also have many more faces to cover and transition. the armadillo, while small is always a challenge every time.

you are correct, my others typically have more brugandy area exposed than this one. i'm doing this one a bit darker because, a skyhawk has a small area on the bottom and no one is going to be seeing the bottom of a mobat or armadillo unless their dead or on the way to being so.
i will be leaving some of the bottom of the main body burgandy. if i don't like it, i can always go back and add pattern to it. i'm sure i'll do it in the end. also, the thickness of the mask strips and the distance at which i place them greatly affect the outcome. you can see on the RC car, the pattern doesn't appear to be in scale with the car. at least i see it that way. i cut the same strips i do with joes and i think it came out to large. i'm honestly worried about the patterning on the nose section. i've never done this on a conical shape where it ends up more of a series of parallel spirals that taper toward the nose. it's going to be a challenge for sure.

I love your technique there. The car still looks good.
You should decal it up with "Sponsored By Cobra Industries" logos... I am not 100% versed in the Python patrol colour scheme. Are the "diamonds" in between the stripes supposed to be snake scales? If so, i have a friend with a laser cutter. It occurs to me that if he could do a sheet of the scales(Cut out in the proper shape), maybe from vinyl sheet, you could do the reverse. Paint the thing black, alternating with the silver as you do on the final coat, THEN apply just the scales, to cover that coat. The final topcoat would be for the burgundy. And it might be easier, as the small vinyl scales would be easier to conform to the hull. It's just a thought. But i am going to ask him for a quote for a sheet of those scales in any case. I like the idea of this... And also, i am no stranger to tedious masking. I recently did a Moebius MKII viper from Battlestar Galactica painted to look like it was made by NASA(In the style of the Space Shuttle Orbiter). So i know your pain. It takes forever laying those lines down(And hoping that the paint doesn't run under the tape...). Can't wait to see the day when your masking tape all comes off and the markings go on! |
