There was at least ONE single seat F-14A. It was used for spin/high AOA testing.
As far as F-14A/B differences they went beyond engines. The B had to have an extension built in to accommodate the F110GE400 engines. There are some avionics differences, even moreso later in life after the Bombcat upgrades, with the RIO's getting a larger targeting screen. Some A's had the NACA gun vents, and all B's did. If you guys think about it, the new Sky Striker can be seen as an imrovement over the original. Sidestick, wide angle HUD, engines, those 3 are improvements over the original, though the HUD is negated by the helmet. |

Shin you never cease to amaze me lol.
What Im saying is externally there are minor immediately noticeable differences between the 3 jets. The single cockpit "test" bed is an exception to the norm and to date I have never seen that version, not even in the Grumman archives here in Bethpage NY. The airframe of an F-14B is an F-14A airframe upgraded, meaning the original airframes were modified to become F-14B's. The F-14D's are the only NEW airframes designed and built for all equipment we see in that version of the Tomcat. But Shin remember my previous post is directed towards Skystriker upgrading, so I'm mentioning the obvious exterior differences in the jets that would be visually noticed right away. If we wanna get crazy we can go so far as to make correct cockpits for F-14A, B and D models, all of which vary, most noticeably in the F-14D with it's vastly upgraded targeting and computer controlled flight assistance advancements. Under the hood there are MAJOR changes over the years... really major. The F-14 "Fixed Wing" prototype was a single seater though. That's the one that looks like an F-15 in basic shape and design. The F-14 project had some REALLY REALLY awesome future upgrades that would have called for completely NEW airframes to be built, and I've seen quite a few documents on the F-14 after the D model and I have to tell you...... I am so sad to not have seen them made. BUT on a HIGH NOTE I do have photos that I took of the next gen Tomcat Protoype Model, which is a BIG model, 6 feet in length or so. If you wanna see the pics PM me with your email I'll send them to you. I want to make a Skystriker into that next Gen Tomcat. I think you'd dig it. I'll send ya all the things I have and some web links where you can really read some awesome things about the next gen Tomcats that never made it to the production line.
