Hey guys. Got a little bit of time spent on drawing up plans for a true heroes scale Comanche.*
I scaled the true heroes apache to approximately 1/28. With that in mind, a 1/28 Comanche would be 55cm or thereabouts.* I downloaded a set of plans on the net and scaled them up myself by hand on my drafting table and with the help of my handy model scale conversion app on my iPad.* I have taken pics which show the size a pilot should be compared to the Comanche and then a ROC figure to show Howe, inch bigger they are in comparison.* I also took a picture with a boxed TH apache. In that picture, the tail rotors are precisely lined up at the back and to show the size difference of the two.* Anyway, here are the pics.* Last edited by bar; 12-16-2011 at 11:17 AM.. |

Looks amazing - but the backseat looks to be pretty close in terms of clearance for the figure. I can't remember Scarlett's height, but I think she is on the short side for RoC figures. You might make the scale off just a bit in terms of height to accommodate the gunner. I think that is also a common occurrence with Joe toys - the cockpit being slightly out of scale to give more room for figures.

Hey. Thanks for the comment. The low clearance is just because of the angle I took the picture from. There would actually be room for the tallest current joes to fit in there. I understand that hasbro is famous for skewing the proportions to get figures to fit in a hull that is undersized, but that will not be happening here(I want it to be accurate and in proportion most of all). The funniest thing is that for the Comanche to be *properly* scaled to Joes, it would have needed to be 79cm long... My main working assumption here is that the talented scratch builders here who would like a Comanche hull to do a custom with(I'm looking at *you* Nath...), would most likely prefer a Comanche in TH scale, so it could be displayed next to the apache. If anyone watching this who would be even REMOTELY interested in a Comanche vacform would prefer one in PROPER 1/18 scale, please chime in here, either on this thread or by PM'ing me privately. I can do it larger. It will be no harder to make it 79cm long. It will take me the same amount of time. And the difference in the cost of the hulls will be negligible. And if I did it in proper 1/18, the joes would be roughly the same size as the litte pilot guy I showed next to the hull in the image above. I'd value opinions here guys. Feel free to post yours if you have one. I'm not going to hold you to buying one just for stating an opinion. This project will probably only be suitable for the skilled amongst us who enjoy a good challenge. |

I am looking forward to seeing this when it's completed. I would be interested in purchasing one (as long as the cost is not overboard). Keep us posted.

Thanks. This project is probably going to be true 1/18 now. More than enough room for two Joes. And an engine. And a fuel tank... |

What do you expect the price range to be on this?

For sure.
Most of the items i make are for me first, and if anyone else wants one that's a bonus. So i will have a test shot in the next few weeks. I am hoping to be able to get the masters made this week, work permitting. Well i expect the hull vacform pieces to be less than $50 for the entire hull. with it being styrene, i would normally just scratch the rest of the inserts myself(Cockpit, gear bays, ordnance bays, etc), reducing the need for resin bits. If all you need is the hull(And can do the rest from styrene sheet yourself), then it's going to be fairly cheap for a 79cm long Comanche... But i can't know for sure till i get the masters done and send them away to be formed. It's only then that the place i deal with will be able to give me a quote. I'll know for sure when i get my test shot back. And i'll update the thread as i go with progress. |

Got the shape drawn up and cut out of styrene.
And that shape is now drawn onto two pieces of MDF that are screwed together. It's a go, people. |

Looking more and more awesome, I'm seriously considering this. . .
Since I wasn't able to score an Apache. How much do you think a basic cockpit would cost? Also I get that it will be just the hull but will the weapons bay be accessible too? Last edited by DARKWIND; 12-23-2011 at 07:01 AM.. |
