Like the title says, this one is still very much in progress. I'm a tad further along than the pictures show, but not much. This is a Starscream custom based on the GI Joe / Transformers comic.
In this series, ole Screamy is based on a Cobra Nightraven, which just happens to be my favorite jet from the series. Almost the entire project is scratchbuilt. To stay true to the concept, I'm attempting to use as much of the Nightraven as possible. To start I had to make sure the thing would even work. To that end I drew up the nightraven in CAD and started breaking it down per the comic stylings. That led to drawings like you see here. When finished, Starscream will be just at 2' tall. Pretty dang big. From the CAD drawings I got to scratchbuilding. I started with the head which was made from Styrene. The Face is sculpted Bondo and a bit of styrene. The eyes will eventually be gold mylar as a nod to the original 80's toy figure. I've now started on the main torso. It is almost entirely styrene sheet and intergrates the front nose of the Nightraven. I'm working on the Shoulder bells now - they will either be cast resin or vac-formed. I haven't made my mind up yet. Then I'll get the neck area and back resolved out using more of the nightraven panels. I'll post more updates as I have them done. This is gonna take a while as its a side project. -Gary |

I'm going to try for SOME articulation. If I had access to a laser cutter, I'd be going all out on the armatures. Some of the parts would need to be spring reinforced lexan so the jounts don't give out.
The last thing I want for this is to be a giant custom Shogun Warrior. When this is all said and done, I'll probably end up molding the main components so I can have stronger reinforced resin versions. -Gary |
