Thank you boys. It'll be done as soon as those graphics arrive.
I have acess to the original details, but not sure I want to put them on this one. perhaps the next one.

If you can afford them, the Hasegawa and Tamiya models should have them.
Too expensive to maintain. 40 maintenance hours per 1 hour of flight. Politics involved. F-14D canceled before program could get upgrades to increase shelf life. NATF and A-12 canceled plus Tomcat 21 proposal shot down, all the navy had left was the Super Hornet program. If not, they had to depend on the USAF for air defense and there's no way they were going to let that happen as the air force would use that to further the argument that aircraft carriers aren't necessary and that more strategic bombers are more than sufficient enough to take their place.

...that is a nice model you got going there Shipwreck, nice cockpit detailing, shame it's got to be box stock, else I know you would have added the eject handles... |

It should be said that the F-14A was never envisioned to have the TF30 engine as a standard, it was only meant for the first Tomcats off of the production line. With the TF30 the plane was underpowered, and the TF30 had a very high stall margin. The F-14 under normal flight conditions, ie, both engines functional, is resistant to spins. However, if there is a situation of asymetric thrust(one engine out), at low speed and high AOA, it is prone to entering a flat spin that is very hard to escape. Since the TF30 was very problematic, the chances of flat spins were substantially higher with the F-14A. The F-14B/D's didn't have that problem as the engines they had were much much more reliable. With the F-14A it was said that you had to fly the engine, not the plane. With the F-14B/D the full potential and beast could finally be unleashed. Probably should also be said that there were some skilled pilots who were able to make use of asymetric thrust intentionally in dogfights. Quote:
I read that those planes were destroyed in '10, is that not so? I would love to know there are some left...

Yep.. I added the ejection seat handles.. I had to... forget the contest rules.. would rather have a step closer to authenticity, then paper work!
I took a candle, and part from left over sprue, heating up the prue stem, pulling it ever lightly, when it was hot enough the sprue stretched into a post like wire, the faster a sprue is pulled, the longer or tighter then wire gets. I sometimes do this for car antennas, and other lines . great for ariel wire for older planes too! Anyway, That is how I made the ejection handles. They aren't true parts but... least that they are part of the kit.

Love the Tomcat, beautiful fighter. I used to play a pc game back in the day, in which you could also fly the F-14. I loved to use the AIM6 Phoenix missiles, which you could fire from 40 miles away, so the target got destroyed when you were back in the mess, enjoying a few cold ones
Anyway, this is looking great so far man. You clearly put a lot of work in this and it shows. Keep it up! |
