UPDATE: At this time things have gone from bad to worse. I can no longer afford even the cheapest of materials for this dio and am placing it on an indefinite hiatus. I do not know if or when I will be able to get back to working on it, and am asking any moderator available to close this thread. If I am ever able to once again work on it then I'll start a new thread or see if they will re-open this one (if that's a possibility).
********** A while back I had started to build my take on Serpentor’s throne room. However not long after I started I lost my job and then went through a year of hell (6 months of unemployment and 2 deaths). That project fell by the wayside, and then into the trash. But I had this pile of Wal-Mart brand foam board just lying around with no idea of what the hell I was going to do with it. Then, after a while away, I saw kramer70’s awe-inspiringly massive Cobra Temple diorama and I thought to myself “now THERE’S an idea, why not make my own Cobra diorama”! I know, not very original, but, hey, it never hurts to give it the old ‘college try’. My “altered history” of the Cobra base is that they’ve taken over an ancient temple that has stood for thousands of years and has been occupied by every major conquering force in history from the Romans to the Nazis, so it’s already seen some use. When Cobra moves in they don’t go through and refurbish the whole thing, making it all pristine and pretty-like…they’ve got better things to do like take over the world! So instead of a remodeling job, they just go through and modernize what they have to and leave the rest as is, fixing up things here and there as need be. Plus I’ve been watching the ‘Alien’ movies, ‘Red Dwarf’ and all sorts of other “broken down” science fiction movies with all the cool structures. I sat down and started cutting with no real plan or layout, just building walls as I saw fit in my head and found ways to put things together. Like I said, it’s all been built up and over repeatedly over the years, and all Cobra has done is added their layer to the mix as well. The materials I have used so far are things I’ve had lying around the house or could obtain from Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, etc. So far that list includes: • foam board • drinking straws • 1/8” wood dowels • frame hanging wire (standard and reinforced) • string • Coke® can • mesh plastic canvas • 12v Houseworks® lights • fluorescent yellow paper • fabric paint • blue cellophane gift wrapping • tub caulk • needles • toothpicks • glass vial filled with orange dish soap • toilet-paper rolls • aluminum foil • circuit boards from used/broken electronic devices • seasoning plastic filter caps • cake decoration bottles The list will, of course, continue to grow as I continue on with this project more and more. I have no idea how long this will take me, but in a way this is going to fulfill a lifelong dream I had as a kid in the 80’s, wishing I had a massive playset for my Joe’s or Cobra’s to call home, something only I had and no one else. This is the entry elevator to my personal Cobra base:
(taken with my front lamps off and only the two built-in lights active and the overhead lamp) Right now I’m finished with this section, but as soon as I get my hands on some dirt from some of the local construction sites in my subdivision, I’m going to go in and dirty this up some more and possibly even add a few more details and maybe even figure out something to do with the paint to “rock” it up some. Behind the single-person elevator (which of course doesn’t work) is a small entry-way that will lead into a long, narrow hallway that will be built when I get to the point where I can decide on the overall size and structure of the thing. |

This is the first section I started to work on with this project. I have no idea where it will be placed in the “grand scheme” of things, but here it is:
I stopped working on it (still need to add more details, finish painting, figure on whether or not there will be a third level to this particular section) when I got the wild-hair up my ass to do the elevator entrance. Now that that piece is at a stopping point I can continue with this. I’ve got a ton of work still to go, but this piece should give me a good idea on just how deep this project will be in the end. |

Great work, any chance of some howto/during build pics and parts breakdowns and the like to give other people ideas about how to make such cool looking structures?

I have to admit, when I saw that your material list consisted of a Coke can, drinking straws, and toilet paper rolls, I wasn't expecting much. You showed me, MJC. These two dioramas absolutely blow me away.
Count me in a someone who would be interested in more details how you put these together. To put it bluntly, I would love to steal some of your ideas. By the way, instead of real dirt from a construction site, consider using pastel chalk ground up and applied with paintbrush (a tried-and-true weathering technique used by model builders). A good hobby or craft shop often have packs that contain just earth tones. You can mix the colors to get the exact shade of dirt you want, and the brick red makes an excellent rust. Code:
