Zartan was always my favorite and remains so. I just love the look of him and that camo ability just the best. I love the color-change feature of the figure and skier. No military realism there. Just flat out cool. Destro, Baroness, etc. It was the difference and the colors that made it so great.

That's so true about the characters that caught our eye in our youth. Those characters may seem cheesy to us now, because we have grown up. We know now what is more realistic and practical despite looks.

For this reason, I have been revisiting the o-ring figures. More characters than just SS and SE.

And that hooked the majority of us. For many of us, characters like the ninjas, raptor, Mindbender were figures that we didn't like.

No. It was the filecard that fleshed out the character. Not how they looked.

Honestly my favorite characters as a kid were the ones that were at least a little bit more realistic. Hit & Run for example was one of my favorites because he actually looked like a soldier to me. Sci-Fi, Blowtorch, Mindbender.....not so much. Even as a kid they just seemed goofy and during battles they were always one of the first laying face down with a sword sticking out of their backpack hole.

I tended toward more militaristic and less colorful/fanciful Joes when I was a kid, but I liked some color. I was bored by Rock and Roll's look, and Airborne was my favorite. I don't think I ever saw a Sci-Fi amongst my friends. With Cobra, however, all bets were off. It was a like a rainbow of fruit flavors with Cobra, and that was fine by me since they were the flashy terrorists. My favorite Cobras were Major Bludd and the Crimson Twins.

Troynos, Wry1.... others of the same mind....
I also favored the more realistic Joes. To me, they were the coolest and are still my favorites to this day... But some of those other guys were on my top shelf from time to time too. I think that even on the periphery those weirder Joes made the Joe universe more interesting for all of us. And Cobra had cartoon- character-syndrome and coloration from the start. (Bright Red Hiss Tank Driver, I'm looking at you)... The file cards- oh yes the file cards gave our Joes some character... but look over them again. There's more repetition in the early cards than later when we got some real "unique" weirdos... Especially those original guys... could Hasbro have stuck with that formula and made 100+ guys all wearing that same green uniform, carrying the same M-16, wearing the same helmet, with only slight variations in the face and hair color? I don't think so. If they COULD have done that they WOULD have. It would have been the cheapest way to go. But we would have gotten bored more quickly. Look at the Bravo Team guys... great figs sure... but are they characters you'll remember in 30 years? I doubt it! |

What repetition in the filecards? Each has a unique personality quote and history. Are you talking military schools, which were dropped from later cards? Why wouldn't that have repetition?
