I have scene lots of amazing dioramas or sets you guys have made and I want to just give it a try, something simple at first. I have a local hobby shop that carries this kind of stuff, only been there once when a friend took me and didn't even think back then I would be doing this, or thinking it.
I'm just curious how much your average tools cost for your simple dioramas, not advanced. Then your basic parts, barrels for instance. I know it's hard to say exactly, why average price. I was hoping to use an example on here but you guys make some advanced stuff. I am trying to start slow and see if I even have the talent to do this. I'm a computer artist, never did that well in art class at school, granted I wanted to get out of school and play after. Right now I just use my backyard for photos, which is good, just a pain to set up out there, even with great CA weather. My backyard makes great background except if a little knife fell it would be lost forever. A safe place inside would be great. Thanks for any info, especially tools, only must have tools please. Again I know I'm being vaque and sorry about that, just not my lingo, any questions please ask and I will try and say more. Keeping this post simple like how I want to start. |

Check out Joedios.com for odds and ends things.Like crates, vending machines,desk,walls.......I'm looking to build my first dio too, going to use foamboard for building the set.You can get that from walmart for really cheap. The price just depends on how much you want to spend.
Someone with more knowlegde can tell you more.Thats just the easiest way i know i to do it. |

Thanks for the links and info. Good to know I'm not the only one just starting. I'm really at stage zero, gathering info.
Mainly a cheap trial to see if can do this. I'm patient at least. |

I would say over all the cost is minimal but the TIME and LABOR is intense!
Unless of course you are building the giant dios that have been done on here recently. Then the cost is probably high too.

I made a desert dio by buying some foam insulation from Home Depot for like $5, some clean, fine grit sand from the craft store for a few bucks, and some Elmer's glue. Just carve out the shape you want the ground to be, mix the sand with water and the glue, and then pour it all over the foam board. It looks really good, and it cost less then $10.

Go to youtube and search "because you asked" this guy takes trash and turns into masterpieces. Yeah its 40k, but can give you a idea on how easy and cheap it really is to make a diorama with alil imagination.

I too have been researching the intricate needs of creating a diorama...and i've learned this general rule
buying what can be made will save you time but cost you more. you mentioned barrels...i researched the price of 1:18 barrels that are sold online...and basically come down to a unit cost of about a dollar. depending on how many you order this may or may not be the way to go. While i used to look at other toylines to see what can be salvaged and repurposed...i've since found myself combing the aisles of lowe's and home depot. PVC pipe...thin gauge wire...wire mesh...these are quite inexpensive...and a little goes a long way. though it's dangerous because i also find myself looking at metal duct work and the like...which is quite expensive for the visions that dance in my skull basically what i'm saying is do not have a budget...or a deadline...you will surpass both regardless |

Tankster posted a Diorama Tutorial that shows how to make a really good, yet cheap diorama. Really good tutorial too.

I'd have to say as far as tools go my Dremel is by far the most used and most versitile, ther are a ton of attachments for it that turn it into nearly any other tool, from a drill to a tiny saw, a router and even an orbital sander. As for matierials I use wood, some wood can be expensive but if you buy a sheet of mdf or ply you can make multiple sets. Balsa wood is pretty cheep and is very easy to work with. I also go to yard sales and second hand shops to look for stuff, just use your imagination nearly anything can be broken down to use in a dio such as a stainless dish rack I'm going to cut down (with my dremel thats right its an angle grinder as well) to make prison bars. I found some computer components tha have little switches on them that im going to pull off and use for something. So mate just think it and it will happen.
