I'm ambitiously planning my first custom - a repaint of the regular archangel to his silver and black X-Force costume.
To the experts and experienced out there: 1. Since Archangel has a lot of lines and patterns on his costume, what's the best way to retain the straight lines on his body? Painter's tape? 2. Also, I'm thinking of using Tamiya acrylic (only need black, silver, and blue anyway). Will this work? 3. What is your paintbrush of choice? Thanks in advance for your help, and I apologize if this question has been asked in some other thread before.

I did the same thing for my Uncanny X-Force dio rather than open the Marvel Sub one... I used Citadel paints from Games-workshop and am happy with how he turned out. There are a LOT of lines to tape on that uniform... I think I taped just the larger ones and did extra careful free-hand with the 'in between' lines.

I actually did this!
As you can see, the lines aren't perfect, but I'm overall pretty pleased with them. If you're really worried about the lines, you could tape it off. Or you could paint the larger silver section and then go back with the black and cover what you want. As long as you don't glob your brush full, your brush should leave fairly straight lines. I love Tamiya. In a pinch, any other acrylic works, but Tamiya tends to give me the best results. Brushwise, I use whatever feels comfortable. Don't cheap out on them, though. I tend to prefer "straight edged" brushes (not sure if they have a specific name or not) of varying sizes. Good luck dude!

The best way to do straight lines is just take your time and use very thin paint. What I usually do is lay down the base color first over the entire figure. After it's dry, lay down the lines where you want them. Do this as neatly as possible, but if you go outside the lines, don't worry too much. After the lines are dry, go back with your base color again and straighten them out. I used that technique on my Future Foundation Spider-Man and my current Spawn figure and it works pretty well.

You guys are awesome! Your customs are so good that I'm getting a little bit intimidated, but inspired at the same time.
Excellent resource - thanks! I wish somebody could post a video of customizing a figure as intricate as this...

Heres mine. I used Tamiya Flat black and Tamiya XF-16 (silver something lol) I paint the black first then the silver. If you happened to smudge the silver or paint it too thick, use a black marker to touch up. Dont forget the red on the eyes as well. I used a toothpick for that. Happy customizing |

Quick question -
I tested the Tamiya X-1 glossy black on another action figure. The paint looked good, but it scratched off too easily. How do I prevent the scratching off from happening?

If you are going to try paint tape...use Frog Tape...and you can cut and trim them to your liking. But use extreme patience. Paint a line or two and then let it dry...overnight. Then do other lines if needed...again wait overnight. A custom rushed looks like Corps figures!
