Of course, if you can't find what you need in parts, we can always make it.

Hey Gup,
Yeah, I'm ok with making the helmet detail (already have), but what I'm trying to get going is - ideas and parts for making these guys. Outside of Ghost, Roach, Soap, Price (main characters), I haven't really seen any of the dozens of MW characters being made. Like the standard guys you see/fight in the game, for instance. You know how it happens though - No one wants to speak up about anything until after someone puts up a really good custom... then it's "how'd you do that", "parts please", and of course "stolen". I'm trying to generate some interest from those who want it, to start talking about good (more accurate perhaps) parts choices and recipes. I don't know... maybe there just isn't enough of a draw for the "real" stuff. Since, the only game system I own is a PSP I don't know how much input I can give. I'm assuming Ghost is the guy I've been seeing floating around with the skull mask. I think I saw that on Monkey Depot but I didn't know where he was from.. The only game I'm obsessed with is the Boss games for Metal Gear but while some modern tech gets pulled into this 1969-75 storyline, it generally keeps the gear grounded in that era so I find myself designing my figures closer to that. I'm also more interested in green badgers that are deployed in enemy territory for months and appear a little more low tech. With that said, I think it would great to come up with ways of making modern equipment. Slayer Designs is starting to do more tactical gear that can be added on and I know they've done some torsos too. Going through some of my reference photos, some things i notice with more modern soldiers that I've been wanting to try... -handguns often times have cabled connections to the uniform to keep the weapon from being disarmed or lost. -I'm using a craft wire technique with a drill and a pair of pliers to make what appears to be coiled cable. -various name brand items and logos that you see being used like "Mechanic" gloves. -I've been working with CS5 to make some waterslide decals of some of these logos. Maybe if I have enough done and there's enough demand for them I can find someone to print and sell them. My printer's quality is terrible and would be able to do it. Someone offered to take a look and see what they can do with my smoke grenade labels but they haven't got back to me yet. -I've noticed some special forces units having a second pair of gloves for repelling. The second pair is often clipped to their gear. -You can find these on some of the Forces of Valor SF figures. I have about 3 pair myself. One of them I plan on using with my Hit N Run that's down the road. -glow stick packs. -another item that can be made with styrene and either painted and put on a wire ring or can be glued right onto the gear. -zip ties. - maybe just thin strips of styrene. I'll sometimes buy the Forces of Valor special forces figs at target and take all of the pouches. I rarely ever have to use more than my hands to take them off. One of them has a left thigh pouch that I love because it's a tri pouch for smg ammo and looks great. Back a couple years ago, they had a bunch of MLB figures with sunglasses that worked well but that's kind of expensive even on clearance. The Roc Baroness's sunglasses are a little too squared in my opinion but maybe with a little paint and love it would look a little better. Another thing I've been wanting to try is this helmet. I think the Lift-Ticket helmet would be a nice base. |

You want Ops Core helmets, preferably ones you can put NODs on.
Something that looks like Crye Precision plate carrier (or LBT) Weapons - there are a million to choose from. I'd do an M4 derivative like an ACR or something like that. Good luck

After looking a lot of those helmets online, I might try to see if Marauders would make us a modular helmet that works like their modular weapons.

That's a great idea. They could do nods, a visor, facemask, goggles, side-mounted cam, gas mask... Lots of potential there.

All of the mentioned gear is great guys... that's what I'm talking about!
Protec helmet with mic = Bravo Team. Have 'em. It's probably the best thing out there for a base, once you remove the sculpted goggles. Remove the mic too, because it makes the helmet sit funny on a head (can attach later). Let's get into some good base fig parts - I'm working on a fig right now, consisting of Shock Trooper minus the head and arms. Not that you can't use them, but for what I'm doing, I switched the arms for the Desert Ripcord or RoC Desert Duke arms. Why? Because that arm set looks more fitting for the overall BDU look that I'm going for, AND they have more range of motion (although I did trim the inside elbow a tad bit for more). I made another fig a few weeks ago, which I did not post yet, using the entire ST fig minus the head. It works obviously, but for certain looks/designs, the arms look a little big - imo. The torso works for certain designs since it's based on the newer combat "shirts". However, if not wearing a vest of some kind, it will look a little bare. Gloves - depends on what you want of course, so you have plenty to chose from. My latest is using the hands from the PoC Desert? SE with Timber. Really nice detail for that "armored" tactical look. Head(s) - again, depends on what you're going for. If you'll notice in pix and stills from MW/2, the mask has a uniformed eye opening (meaning rounded, not shaped), so using heads like the 1st FF might look good, but it's not the right design. I've found that the ParaViper head has a fairly good overall look, with the ribbed mask - imo. Gear/Pouches - this one's tricky. Bravo Team stuff seems to be the best right now if you care about more accurate and better scaled parts. They also have a lot of misc. gear pouches like gas mask bags, utility, and various others. Good stuff really, so I'd advise checking them out if you've been sitting on the fence with these. Imo, most of the stuff available through various sources are either not the right design or the right size for using on anything more "real". They tend to be made in what I call a "willy-nilly" fashion. Meaning - they're made to look good for what they are, but not much (if any) consideration it put into magazine/clip sizes, numbers of mags being held in, or configuration (on torso's). Again, look at pix to see what this stuff really looks like. I can't stress that enough, because visual research is key to producing anything "real"... duh... but you guys already know this. Weapons - this is a really good one too. Again, if you're trying to achieve accuracy and scale - you're boned. 99.9% of what's out there is lacking in one of those two areas, to some degree. Bravo Team weapons seem to be the most true 1/18 scale overall, but even they're not perfect. However, without scratch building anything (for us insane people), Bravo should be heavily considered for your weapon choices. Marauder's tends to be slightly larger than 1/18 size, so tread lightly - if you care. Hasbro's latest stuff is fairly good with the details, but the scale can still sometimes be a little off depending on what it is. The Hasbro G36 rifle, that came with many later figs, is really good except for the buttstock - it's too long. I know this might sound nit-picky, but this stuff will hinder your figs range of motion and poseability. It's something to think about if you want those tight tactical firing positions. That's all for now... Last edited by Obi-Shinobi; 01-25-2011 at 11:21 AM.. |
