I'm just about done with my massive Roadblock custom that features about a dozen different pieces of gear but there's one thing that keeps bothering me. The ammo belt.
I just can't bring myself to allow RB to carry around a bunch of tank shells for his machinegun. I had a very fine detailed Jin Roh ammo belt for a 6 inch figure that was in perfect scale for Joes but I don't know what happened to it. Anyone have any ideas short of making my own? |

personally, instead of cluttering that fine figure with ammo belts, i would make like a drum sack or can that attached to the M2. they make um for saws and 240's, so it wouldnt look to odd on a gijoe .50 cal.

Gup,
I believe that Hasbro ammo belt is roughly the right size for the .50, but it lacks the right detail. I also used the Jin Roh stuff a while back, and wish I had lots more of it! I've looked into scale model stuff, and could only find 1/35 ammo belts for .50 and .308 (I think) that are somewhat flexible. These could probably be used for .223 belts, or something similar. Proper ammo belts would be a blessing, that's for sure. |

That is one very, very nice Roadblock custom.

Here is something to think about...
If you like the detail sculpt of a 1/35 scale model kit parts (including the belt) you can try using hydrospan and up size it to 1/18th scale. I have used this several times to up scale the deluxe Movie Transformers (which are about 1/32 to 1/35 scale) and have been very pleased with the results. It requires you to make a mold of the original, cast the hydrospan part, "grow" it in water for a day or two, make a new mold of the grown part and cast the final size in resin plastic. It sounds like a lot of work, but it is worth it if you can't find what you are looking for.

If you have a "Rite-Aid"rugstore near you, they have toys called "freedom force". One comes with a motorcycle, but also includes a very nice ammo-belt. It's a 10$ ammo-belt, but if you customize, it's worth every penny. I used one on my origin Snake-Eyes.

I'll have to keep searching. I've already found a couple things I might try for later projects.
While I appreciate Hasbro gave us that ammo belt in scale, I think I'd sacrifice that scale for something that hangs correctly and has a certain aesthetic quality that fits the character. I found a 1/35 scale kit that is all a combination of brass .50 cal rounds both spent and unused. It uses etched metal plates that roll up and hold the rounds with a weighted chain quality. It's a lot of work but it looks worth it. I'll have to try to think of a way to do something similar at this scale. I did find an overseas 1/16th scale military distributor that had some neat stuff but it's expensive without figuring the international delivery charges. |
