I saw this article and immediatly thought of how great it would be for making custom Joe figures: MakerBot Thing-O-Matic: The portable 'factory in a box' that can create any 3D object out of plastic | Mail Online
It's not cheap, about $1,230 now. But like everything else the cost should go down once people start buying it. It seems like something out of the Jetsons to me. Every new home built should have one of those in the basement. If you don't like a specific gun or missle rack on a vehicle, just make a new one! It would be great if you could scan a 12" figure, and make it in the 3 3/4" size. I've seen laser etchers before for wood and metal that are vaguely similar to what this does, but they cost closer to $10,000 and are a lot more complicated. This thing is basically like what that guy used in "Jurassic Park 3" to make the reproduction of a velociraptor's nasal cavity. |

Or you can just enroll into architecture at University of Michigan. They've got every type of 3d printer you can imagine.

Looks great, can't deal with hinges though.Items could be done individually though I suppose.I wonder about the costs involved - new plastic and how much it wastes when it makes an item and the programming costs(maybe)
All in all though I think this is great and a massive step in the right direction for big kids like us!!!

wow wonder how small or big the items can be? I would say the software would limit and tell the user when they gone beyond what the machine can produce but still for a little less than $1500 to get started that would be sweet.
