Okay, so I started painting a project and mixed a couple of colors to get what I wanted. I bought Model Master paints assuming they were all acrylics because everyone recommended it when I asked about acrylics. So after I mix and paint a head, I realize the two colors I used say "enamel" very, very small on the bottle, with no mention of acryl. One bottle I didn't use yet says "acryl" with no mention of enamel.
My questions is, will this enamel ruin a GIJoe head and eat away at the plastic like some people have mentioned? Hobby Lobby is apparently a horrible place to buy paint. These enamels and acrylics were all in the same display together. |

Yeah, there's some other "model master" that's not acryllic. I was looking the other day and it was mixed up some. I don't know if it will eat the plastic, but I've heard it might not ever dry.

yeah enamel will take forever to dry and sometimes like turner said will eat the plastic making it weak. the only area where you could use enamel is on the upper legs and the torso since it is made from a hard plastic not like the soft plastic that is molded on the arms and lower legs.

What if it's a vintage figure? Big, hard plastic, thick head.

By vintage figures do you mean 82-94? If so, enamel won't hurt the plastic and is a better choice to use on those figures, in my opinion.

Really? Hmmm...
Alright, another question: what are the results/repercussions of applying some acrylic OVER the enamel to eliminate the odd stickiness I am now experiencing...(er...that my figure is now experiencing...yeah )? |

If it is the softer plastic, then you must use acrylic or a super fast drying enamel that is not thinner/oil based. I have had great success with just using the craft paint (acrylic) from Hobby Lobby. There are many different colors (especially for skin tones). Just don't try to cover the area to be painted with one thick coat. I have found that 3-4 thin coats works best. You must use an acrylic clear coat. It is best if you spray each part with the clear coat before you reassemble it. This usually holds up well to light play and posing, but not heavy play. Good luck.

Thanks! I guess maybe I'll just use some sealer over the part I did in enamel and use acrylics on the rest. Is there a sealer that will take the gloss off the paint? (Hobby Lobby REALLY screwed me by mixing up their paints...)
