So what are the pros and cons of paint markers vs. actual paint with brushes for detail work, like faces?
Does the paint marker tend to bleed a lot? Are they tough to work with? Are they actually better for someone without a perfectly steady hand? If brush work is "the best" but someone is not so great with brushes, do paint markers make the job easier and still put out an adequate product (even if it's not "the best")? Are "ultra fine" paint marker tips even fine enough to do the job of a fine-tipped brush? Thanks for any help! I've searched for discussion on this and not found much detail about the paint markers. |

Hard to say, I've wanted to try out the Gundam markers to see what they are like but have not yet been able to. So far the only thing I have seen them used on is either straight detailing, making lines and the like or for weathering effects. I haven't seen anybody do anything organic like faces and such. Sorry.

Idk if this helps, but I bought a silver and gold paint marker from Sharpie at Target. They do bleed a lot, but I bleed off some of the paint on a piece of paper before I use them, and then gently dab them on whatever I'm using. It works okay. I don't know of any fine point paint markets although that would be nice.

Thanks! I'm primarily thinking of tiny dots or buttons, or tracing eyebrows on vintage figures, or even painting on eyes. It just seems like tiny work like that would be easier with a marker or pen...

I use a super fine(005) micron pen for pupils and eyebrows. Even if I go over the eyebrows with a brush to kinda match the hair color I find it easier to have the pen line as a guide at least. The actual paint markers I've found bleed too much for detailed work....for me anyways.

The silver sharpie might work for buttons. I used it on a vehicle to paint the bolts.

I used to use only Testors Paint Markers. They were a good starting tool. I wouldn't use them exclusively though or use them for small details.
I will say though that for whatever reason, the silver paint from a paint marker is much better than the silver paint from a jar (even if they're both the same color from the same maker) The paint in the marker is mixed a lot better than in the jar (at least for silver that is) |
