Hey guys, I've never done customs before, but I'm ready to start, I've got an extra Vamp, a Firefly, and some other extra guys that I want to repaint (maybe make up a new Quick-Reaction Force or something) What type of paint do you guys recommend? Thanks for the help!

There are many different ways so here's one...that works for me...
Quote:
I use Tamiya acrylics.(I buy them at my local hobby store) They are great to work with because the brushes wash up with water. You can also try Testors Model Master acrylics. (FLAT colors work best ! ! !) I usually do 1 coat and let the figure sit for a day, then repeat 1 or 2 (or 3) times. I don't take them apart, I usually paint them in the pose I want because the paint will slide right off in the shoulder areas so if you move the arms around just touch it up when needed and that's it. Always wash the figure in warm soapy water and let dry before painting. Never try to paint the figure with the intent to finish it in one sitting, .....> "I usually do 1 coat and let the figure sit for a day, then repeat 1 or 2 (or 3) times." The first coat may look like crap but don't keep applying more paint, let it sit for a day and repeat 1-3 times (it should take more 2 or 3 days)for best results. Please note, there are other ways/techniques...this is just what works for me. Also Games Workshop Citadel and Testors Model Masters are both REALLY good !

Get a small table or something to devote to ONLY customs. I made the mistake of starting some customs at the diningroom table and my wife chewed me a new ass. Walmart has small tables from $10 to $20. Draw out your plans before you start. This will help you get a handle on what (if anything) you'll need to purchase. Personally, I like to draw out sketches and then color them in. It helps me know exactly what paints I'll have to purchase (if any). Keep a record of what spare parts and pieces you have to make customs; and keep them organized! I have a fishing tackle box and all of the little compartments make it SO much easier to organize small pieces. Never be affraid to venture beyond the Joe Universe for parts. Alot of my customizing fodder has come from cheap figures at Big Lots. Matter of fact, they have a figure that has a backpack that is a BLATANT ripoff of v1 Alley Viper's backpack. When I did my Shockwave custom, his cap came from the Derek Jeter baseball figure. When it comes to joints (shoulders, elbows, knees), dye them if you can. It may sound strange, but the dye sinks into the plastic and thus, no chipped paint on joints when you pose them. It really only works if you're going from a lighter color to darker, like black). Someone else on the tank does alot of dying - just research it and you should be able to find them. Research your homework. Look online and see if anyone else has attempted the custom before you. Most often, there will be a short story about how the figure was created and they might even tell you some of the snags they hit making it. This can save you ALOT of time and headaches. Hope that helps! |

I use Storm Shadow for a lot of the repaint customs I do. I have never tried to dye the joint ares, but I do some trimming with my dremel tool to leg, torso, and shoulder areas where all the appendages attach. I also take an exacto knife and trim along the inside of the joints to mae some room for the paint to be applied where it wont rub on the connecting joint. This will keep paint rub to a minimun. I mostly do customs for display pieces.

Thanks for all the advice guys, when I get them done I'll post some pictures, maybe I'll document the process too, mistakes, etc... Don't worry about the 'extra' comment, I bought some figs off of ebay just for this purpose!

Might I introduce you to the Guides page on my site,
http://www.jinsaotomesdangeroustoys.com/guides.html Everything there, all the paints, techniques, magnets, joint rub issues, etc, can be used on GI Joe customs. |

Ive never dyed any joints, but I find that tamiya spraypaint coats joins incredibly well and doesnt wear off after its dry. Its pretty amazing. And tamiya spray paint is found in like a zillion colors and there is always the regular hand paint to match each color.
All these other techniques people use are tedious. And taking apart joints is a bitch. |
