So I'm doing some commissioned Robotech customs and I was just curious as to what most tankers thought Rick Hunter's ethnicity was. Personally I want to Make him Japanese, since His actual name is Hikaru Ichijo... Thoughts?

The title should probably be American or Japanese... Sorry... just got back from the bars tonight... a tad drunk... Don't want to offend anybody. Just read through the IDW/Black firefly thread and I don't want this to turn into a racial thing. Just want to know if RH should be Japanese or not.

Even without the original name, I'll still say Japanese. Macross was actually a very multi-ethnic cast for it's time. It's rare that you see an American in a 100% positive light in an anime, and Roy Fokker (who you know is American because all Americans are blond with Cali tans) was practically made of awesome. Yeah, Rick worked as the protagonist, and he grew up into an awesome one, but Roy was the guy everyone wanted to be, and failing that, wanted to have as a mentor like Rick. Admiral Glovel was (I think) Eastern European, Lynn Minmei and her family were Chinese, and I think a lot of other characters were mentioned as having been born in other countries. Even though the main protagonist was Japanese, the Macross Fortress was a UN effort, so the animation team tossed a bit of everybody in there, and it really worked well.

Well I'd consider Hikaru and Rick Hunter to be two separate characters... Hikaru was clearly Japanese, but with Rick you can go either way on it. The character's one major overt Japanese trait the "senpai/kohai" relationship with Roy Fokker became a Big Brother/Little Brother relationship (which in itself could be okay for a Japanese type relationship but really weird in the context of two pilots)...
I don't think the Robotech Novels nor most of the comics ever treated him as being Japanese. I always sorta think of Rick as white because the Japanese elements to his character were mostly edited out. But it certainly wouldn't bother me to see him a Japanese. |

Bruno J. Global was Italian in Macross Henry J. Gloval was Russian in Robotech Minmay was supposed to be part Japanese since she was from Yokohama. And of course you had a Black Character with Claudia... You had Shami Kim and Venessa. Misa/Lisa was supposed to be Japanese... I think Max was supposed to be European. Kakizaki/Ben well obviously he was Japanese in Macross but in Robotech I always saw him as Canadian... "I'll fly rings around 'em, eh?" |

Yeah Mylene Jenius from Macross 7 is supposed to be his 7th Daughter (the show had a fetish for the number 7). For some reason I always though of him as being German. Anyway in Robotech he has between 2-4 Kids depending on who you talk too.. Dana mentioned having a brother (never seen some people discount this line), there was Maya Sterling from Shadow Chronicles, "The Other Daughter" from Dana's protoculture trip, who was called Aurora in the novels. |

Did it ever mention his birth place in "Robotech"?

I'd say:
Hikaru Ichijo of Macross = Japanese Rick Hunter of Robotech = American (maybe of Japanese descent, but who knows?) They are actually two separate characters, after all. Most of the Robotech characters would be American, really, based on how they're presented. Last edited by Jmacq1; 07-02-2010 at 12:16 PM.. |
