I remember way back when, somewhere between '83 and '85, my cousins had made their own Dr. Venom out of an original Cobra Commander body they had painted white and used Grunt's head. I remember this clearly, and think I may even have those parts somewhere in my collection at my parent's house. There may have even been a custom Kwinn, but I'm not certain about this one.
I was just wondering if anybody had some memories like this, or even if there is some recorded evidence of the first custom 3-3/4" Joes. |

me and my bro used to use BAT parts to make Joes who got limbs blown off usefull again, or make them ful-on cyborgs...
also, i painted Return of the Jedi Lukes under shirt white cause i liked it better that way and my dad was a carpenter as a hobbie so i would take the smallest dowle and make more to scale lightsabers as opposed to the toothpick sized ones they came with that slid out of their arms... |

I used to biuld models here and there as a kid, so I would use the paints to deco my plastic army men and to modify a few figures -- but I don't think I ever re-painted a joe back then.
Although not a custom, my dad (who's a dentist) would fix the broken thumbs for me by inserting a small pin into the hand. He would then cover it with the material used to make fake teeth, tooth-colored fillings, etc., and mold it into the shape of a thumb.

AHHH. I remember Hasbro cultivating custom figures as early as '83! In the newsletter that came with your "Gi Joe mobile Strike Force Team" membership kit there were articls on how to enhance the detail on your GI Joe figures which included coloring details on the legs and arms, etc with permanent marker. My best freind also created the first custom figure I ever saw by removing the screw on the back of his figures and mixing the parts of Tripwire and Flash to make an entirely new figure. This was mid to late 1983. So customs have been around as long as Joes! Heck... the whole Joe 12 inch line was about making custom figures by changing outfits, Right?

My first was big boa legs, stalker 2 head and fastdraw torso and arms. I painted him all dark blue and crimson, but I considered him a joe for some reason. Probably made it around '91.
My buddy, whose brother had the straight armers, used to make three armed cyborgs by putting the arms in the neck holes, and, i guess, made him feel less bad about his joes shooting them. |

i remember being extremely bummed when my first joe o-ring broke. i've been playing with them since the first ARH wave, and i must've been around seven years old. once my dad showed me how to fix them, that they could be taken apart and put back together, i was pretty stoked. then i saw my cousins' dr. venom custom, and i was taking them apart and switching body parts like dr. frankenstein. i made dozens of my own characters.
