Hello everybody, first time poster but I figured this was the best place to get guidance on my custom figure project. I've recently had developed several STLs of Characters I wanted turned into 4 inch Gi Joes but so far can't seem to find someone capable of working on the articulation component. I'm tempted to try and teach myself but frankly don't know where to begin, or who could possibly complete such a task. Any advice is appreciated.

What program(s) did you use to create them?

They were sculpted in Zbrush. I had them commisioned so I can't take credit outside of coming up with the design concepts.

Next question; do you have any proficiency with any 3D packages? If not, that would be your first step.
A popular "open" 3D package is Blender. It's gotten fairly good the last few years, past the point of just being a novelty. Lots of folks around here use Blender (I use 3ds Max, but it's expensive.) If you need a community to teach you the basics of 3D modeling, there are quite a few out there. One I used to use was https://polycount.com/ - it started off more of a mod host site for Quake and Unreal content before becoming more of a generalist 3D modeling community. They tend to focus more on game assets, but they have people who know about 3D modeling for printing/manufacturing as well--a few years back I was having issues getting a form of displacement mapping working on one of my models and they were able to help troubleshoot my issue and got it resolved. They could probably give you advice directly, or at worst could point you towards another 3D modeling resource that might cater to your specific objective. Knowing what program you want to use will also determine the workflow you'll be using, though most programs do offer very similar functions and features to modify meshes and add/subtract the volumes necessary to add points of articulation. Also, how much articulation do you want to add? Are you looking at 5POA, or super-articulated?

I was attempting to replicate a basic 1/18 scale figure. Attached are the original model and then the printed articulated result. After reviewing the parts I think there's potential, but the thigh does need to be reworked.

It looks like your overall progress is quite a bit farther along than it sounded. Does the existing articulation come from the original commission? Or, did you do all that yourself?

It was a second artist. I'm planning on casting off the original printed masters. Looking at the.pieces, the joints are a tad delicate, but I think I can fix that by recasting them. The torso and thifh are really the only two areas I wasn't happy with. Even the alternate hair styles came out well.
