So, after a long time of trying to figure out what parts would be best from where, and a custom torso not turning out quite how I liked, I've opted with my alternate plan for a figure.
I'm trying to make a custom in the vein of a miniature I made a while ago, which was also a character from one of my stories. I've got a nice mish-mash of pieces from different places. I have two custom heads from Angel Forge, I got a Mutt William's Jacket piece from Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, I got hands from Vitruvian Armory, and the torso, waist, legs and machete from Marauder. I've tried testing how the pieces work together and I gotta say, so far they fit pretty well. I know the miniature's vest is closed, but given the Angel Forge torso didn't work as well as I hoped and the limited parts I have, I'm happy I got this far. So what comes next? Well, I gotta paint the hands so they look like finger-less gloves. I also have to paint the head, which also means painting the eyes, which I haven't gotten the hang of yet. I have to paint the skin so everything matches, and I'm thinking about painting the waist/legs above the boot a lighter shade of blue. Also, with the heads, one fits perfectly and one sits a little higher on the neck peg than I would like. I dunno, it could just be me. The head with the longer hair straight down fits like a glove, but the expression is more neutral than I'd like. The other head has a more interesting face, but it sits a little high on the peg. I don't want to force it and break something. Hopefully with some patience and some time (I'm not rushing into this as work has been insane and I want to be very careful with this), but I hope my first custom comes out well. Also a big thank you to everyone here in these forums for all your wonderful advice and your patience with my questions. This community has been amazing and I honestly couldn't have gotten this far without you all. So, let's see how Bolo Hale looks during the process. |

Oh wow. Both look good to me. Cool character too. Where can I find your story about him?

So, I do t have the necessary skills to advise well (thankfully there’s many others who do) - but really just wanted to say how much I like it.
You’ve assembled a great build and I think it’s just cool that this is a creation from you writings. A bit of feedback from an unskilled non-painter: if you focus on matching the facepaint to the tan plastic, you won’t have to paint any other exposed skin. Also, I’ve seen customizers use a dry brunch technique with a lighter blue paint onto a darker blue plastic (like you have here) to create a really nice denim effect. Just some thoughts. Again, liking everything about this project. I look forward to seeing how this comes out. @sbaritek1974 - thanks for fixing his pics for him Last edited by Dod Ear; 04-12-2021 at 09:36 PM.. |

@Itchweed, it's an unpublished story for the moment. This is one of the supporting characters. It started as an homage to Billy from Predator and became something else entirely.
@sbaritek1974, thank you so much for the fix. I really don't know how to do pictures here on these forums. @Dodear, I'll take all the advice I can get. I was thinking about matching the facepaint to the plastic. I gotta find the right shade. Still, those eyes are gonna be wonky. I can tell. The drybrushing might be a fantastic way to do that look. Thank you so much! I really appreciate all the feedback. I wanted to do my favorite character from the story (the main character) but the parts from Vortious haven't come in yet and this was always my back up in case that didn't happen. And with the torso from Angelforge not working like I thought it would, this was a crash course of a back up plan, but I'm glad I found all the parts I needed. |

If you don't want to paint a head, you could try a 50th Spirit head. That head is close to what you got there.
That's a sweet build. What is that miniature from?

Nice. It's got a nice post-apocalyptic urban wasteland vibe to it.

@46zone. That’s an idea! I’d have to remove the black paint from the bridge of Spirit’s nose but it just might work if I can’t get the painted head thing work. For the miniature, I used Heroforge. When I was thinking of having some sort of physical version of characters from the story, I found they had a create a character option on their site and had just the right parts.
@stljoe thank you! |

Your choice of parts is spot on, it looks like you've done good research on this, and I really like your idea of matching a character from one of your stories. I can't wait to seeing it finished!

@paokole, thanks a lot. People here in these forums were nice enough to point me in a few directions. The hardest part for me was finding the right legs with this style of boot. I got very lucky with the German soldier uniform from Marauder. I got nervous yesterday when I took the skirt piece off the soldier and put the torso on. It was very wobbly...then I realized I could just use the jeans waist piece and just add the legs. Talk about creative solutions in a jam!
