Painting eyes is definitely the worst for me, but I am also not very good at painting flesh tone and actively avoid painting over moving joints.
I also don't like mixing different styles of figures in displays. I initially started using MTF to make the Action Force figures as I knew Hasbro wasn't going to make them, but when Hasbro proved to be inconsistent with their GI Joe figures I had to start making those as well. Some of Hasbro's newer figures are excellent but they majority of the characters I am interested in are from the 25th line and are mediocre at best, the difference in build quality almost makes them look like a different toy line so I don't like seeing them next to each other. I do still have a small Hasbro GI Joe collection, but there is duplication of those characters with my MTF collection as I don't keep them anywhere near each other. |

About painting eyes. Definitely challenging. Either I am frustrated as hell or I enjoy the outcome if/once it actually works, but if all depends on being able to fix the mistakes. Every brush stroke is going to be a mistake. I plan on that. Some are just less of a mistake than others. Cleaning up the excess paint makes all the difference for me and can be done with an Xacto knife or a broken toothpick after the paint dries just a little (but not too soon). And this is why I am terrible at skin tones because I don’t want to paint the face before I do my eye technique. It’s so much easier on plastic that’s already a decent skin tone. Eyes are too important to me to do it any other way, so I often sacrifice skin tone being right.

This might help with painting eyes.
https://www.fighting118th.com/forum/...2/#post-339140 I used this method most of the time. I sometimes painted the whole eye black and then added 2 dots of white on each side forming a pupil in the middle, followed by the clean up. |

Thanks for sharing your methods Daremo. I haven’t tried black first. Maybe I should give it a go and see what I like better.

I can only imagine how awesome AF80’s custom Action Force display is at this point. Those color schemes are beautiful. Quote:

My issue painting eyes is that its hard personally to get the dot as small as you'd see it done by Hasbro.
My recent custom I actually painted eyes on that were the first time I've ever been satisfied with. With literally the smallest brush I could find at a craft store I gently added more and more white till the pupal looked small enough then I added more skin tone to make it proportional. As far as MTF, etc. I remained completely happy with Hasbro's sculpt/build offerings from start to finish even with the most basic stuff there was enough there that you could add little stuff to to make it feel more detailed. the Viper vest is a good example, its a little too basic but you glue some pouches to it, a radio, a grenadeand it was a modern military vest before Hasbro was even making them. however the real issue for me there was I wish Hasbro had offered more civilian or suited options. I'd kill for a modern Hasbro Joe in Navy dress whites for example Last edited by SPECTER; 11-23-2020 at 06:32 AM.. |

Getting great pics and then all the work to post them. I usually just take phone pics and post to FB. I had a photobucket account and they wanted paid. So then I got something else and updated a ton of links here...but posting to FB is just so much easier. https://www.facebook.com/slaymakerssoldiers

Awesome, I never started with black, always dropped the white down first so I’ll try this method. I have a v2 Firefly who has looked like Rocky in the final round with his eye closed for months because I messed up the one eye so many times now. Did the right eye perfectly out of the gate and then I’ve fleshed over the left countless times.
I take my photos with my phone, upload to Shutterfly to backup, then download them from there to my iPad before finally dropping them on imgur to get easy links to post here. It’s a process but it saves me from having to format the pictures myself.
