Hey Flint_Rocks it’s been good to see you active posting again lately. And good to have you stop by here. It resonates with me in a way that you try to do something different than Joes. I look around at all the talent on the Tank and see these fun remakes of core characters in classic decos and I’m glad they’re doing it, and at the same time get a kick out of when you bring something totally unexpected, like a toy line I haven’t thought about in 20+ years brining it back to life in Joe scale. I’ve tried to bring something a little different too in my own way, although I’ve strayed back to ARAH remakes a little more lately. Although I love the classic Joe customs others are doing I don’t always need to do them myself.
- - - Now for everyone I have a new topic. Ax was describing some frustrations about his recent Starduster custom, specifically how much he fretted over achieving a challenging color: Quote:
So here’s my next question to toss around the water cooler: describe a problem you were trying to solve with a custom, whether parts or paint, that drove you UP THE WALL until you found a solution (or still haven’t) I’ll go first. One of my very first motivations for customizing was my disappointment with canceled figures. For example I became kinda obsessed with the unproduced City Strike Scarlett. In retrospect that figure does not seem quite as cool anymore, but my mind worked overtime for hours and eventually kept returning to it months later trying to come up with parts for a mask. I still sometimes think about how to remake those tonfas - I didn’t want to spend a fortune on FSS Jinx to get them. It’s kind of rewarding when my mind works so hard, IF I eventually have a breakthrough and find a solution, and sometimes it’s a part that was right there in front of me. But it can definitely drive me crazy at times like Ax said. Your turn my friends... Last edited by ARBCO Avenue; 11-18-2020 at 10:05 PM.. |

Honestly, I’m typically pretty happy with my ability to develop solutions when I don’t have the parts just right- my Create-a-Cobra helmet rig being an example. Some people might not care for it, but I find it totally satisfactory. And developing those ideas is probably one of my favorite things about customizing and it’sa way to put a signature on my work.
I only bring that up to say that for me, it’s always color that drives me nuts. The aforementioned CaC another example along with Starduster where I’m not sure the color is just right. To this very day, I’m still waffling on the skin tone I want to use for my Conan customs. I’ll settle on something and a few weeks later it might catch my eye and I hate it again.

That’s cool. I’m a bit the opposite. I agonize over form more than paint, usually. You definitely got me thinking though about how much a customizer can go through hell for, and also enjoy creative challenges. I know I do a fair share of both. I figure more folks have got opinions and stories to tell and I’d love to hear.

Thanks for the kind words ARBCO.
As far as what has given me the most issues. 1. Trying to figure out how to get Buttons Mcboomboom's hidden guns in his chest to work in this scale. 2. How to make Doc Terror and Hacker from the Centurions. They had all those robotic parts and just weird bodies.

I think the fact that I’m so new to customizing helped me with most things because I didn’t start until Marauder & Boss Fight parts were available. Then I’ve been taking baby steps through the entire process starting with Marauder kitbashes, then just painting armor pieces, then full bodies, then adding Boss Fight into the fold, working on skin tones, then eyes, then painting Hasbro stuff, now some sculpting....it’s kept things fresh for me without ever leading to much frustration because it was always like one new skill at a time.
Biggest frustration are parts not fitting together, drives me crazy that the Marauder lines have some parts that don’t just snap together. Some point soon I’m going to finally start modifying the ones that don’t but that situation has stopped me cold on some customs I was starting to put together. The technique I currently have the most trouble with is painting eyes. Never to the point of frustration, just a lot of trial & error where I have to start over quite a bit depending on if I’m having a good day or bad day with it. Positive of that is I’ve had to repaint faces so many times that it’s really helped me with my skin tone blends. I recently got an Army Painter precision brush so that’s giving me some added confidence & enthusiasm for working on those finer paint apps which is why some of my newer customs are including more free hand details like writing & hand drawn decals. The two biggest things that help me get through most issues are the community being so supportive & excited to help with ideas / suggestions / comments. And then that I feel my customs look so much better than a lot of Hasbro / Club releases that it definitely makes the time & effort worth it.

Eyes are definitely the worst, especially at this scale.

My problem is that I love all of the MTF product out there, but the bucks are just a bit off when comparing them to POC and later Joe's. They are too tall I think. I want to use the MTF bucks for customs, but the height issue really bothers me. Therefore my solution has been to use ME Joe body parts for my customs. I still use the MTF accessories though. I think for all of my teams that I have made, only my Baron Ironblood, and my OG tank driver uses the MTF bucks.

While I've been ok with the height of the male MTF figures, I have basically given up on female MTF figures, as they're just way too tall.
Also, as mentioned, eyes are the worst. I haven't been able to paint the eyes of a single head well enough to show off. It's a bummer, because I've bought some great heads over the years from placing like Vortious customs, but my eye painting skills are so bad that I can't use them. I'll get it one of these days, but man it's frustrating. |

I'm the same way with MTF as far as merging them with Joes. Just doesn't work for me.
It definitely works well for MAtt82, KR, Rob, HnR/Orzo, AF80sFan, Shakka, and Steel Brigade because they've assembled pretty expansive collections of MTF/BFS driven customs and they all sync up well. But whenever I try to slip that lone MTFer in my ME shelf, it just doesn't work for me. I've starting using MTF for one-off type characters (Will Eisner's The Spirit is in the works) and Marvel characters, as I think the fit in well enough for that.

Glad to see I’m not alone on eyes. I was actually tempted to get the desk magnifying glass or jewelry inspector eye piece in an attempt to be more consistent with them.
I think part of the reason Marauder builds work well for me is I’m usually building out full groups of unreleased modern guys anyway, so there’s less visual break in my groups because they’re not really mixed in with 25th guys in a way that makes anyone stand out in an obvious way. It’s why you’ll see me do guys like Roadblock v2 because he’s mixed in with my main cast and the first two rows there are Marauder or 50th so they all blend well. But then I won’t do any of the Green Shirts or OG13 because my 82/83 guys are all 25th anniversary. Definitely can see how they’re not for everyone, especially if you have a large official collection. I do find a lot of charm in my 25th guys even if some haven’t aged well, it’s why I always enjoy builds that the “official parts” customizers drop because it’s cool to see someone hit home runs where Hasbro maybe dropped the ball for 25th, ROC, POC, etc. Plus I feel like the imagination & part choosing for those style of customs are so different from what I do with the MTF & BF stuff that it’s really cool for me to see that process & the finished products.
