Lots of great responses here! It's fun to reminisce on inspiring customs of the past and present and hear what inspires people. Like some of you when I was first attracted to the custom scene as an observer, I wasn't so aware of names either, so I appreciate hearing some of those names again, and looking them up. Never a dull moment looking up customs by Stronox, Stocos28, Oreobuilder. I also want to call out Lance858a for building entire imaginative universes. I owe him for inspiring me to try and think outside of the box a bit more and modify parts. I wasn't aware of MWSI or Badsociologist, so thank you Turner, although I'm cursing the photo-bucket debacle now, and for customizers deleting their pictures - I can't seem to find much by Obi-Shinobi that Hunmarine mentioned. It's good to see Ceraurus customizing again! I'm not going to mention too many others because I'm afraid of leaving someone awesome out - many of you commenting here for example, and soon others of you whose work I hope to get to know better. And TrueJoeFan, your comment resonates because it's that encouragement from the customizing community that keeps me here as much as I still am.

I can't even remember the name now sadly but there was a Star Wars figure site in like the 2003-2006ish era that had just hundreds of customs that I think also had original/personalized characters.
The site was mainly black with red highlights if I recall correctly. Them and Jin Saotome customs were really my main inspirations for customization. My main first 3 customs were 1. I painted a GI Joe Barrel Roll all black to be a James Bond in tactical gear.(03'-04'ish) 2. I made a clay mask and repainted a Ninja Bruce from Batman Begins to be a character fromTenchu(2005) 3. I modified a BBI soldier to be a retro Solid Snake(2007) Then GI Joe 25th hit and I got into serious customizations. Here is actually my 3rd original custom with the remains of my very first attempt at a 25th GI Joe custom from 2008. Last edited by SPECTER; 10-19-2020 at 11:09 PM.. |

Thanks for posting the question, ARBCO. This is the kind of discussion I was hoping this thread would elicit.

I’ve been collecting other customizers work that I admire for more than 10 years which all led to inspiration. I have a shelf with their work that I reflect on to better my skills. Some names are Stronox, Ceraurus, MWSI, RV88, Ian, Ratfink, and many more. A lot of the names mentioned are great customizers and there is so much good work out there.

The Marauder Task Force line is definitely what got me into customizing myself. I was always hesitant to alter official Joe product so that line coming out helped create a situation where I felt comfortable putting paint to figures.
As far as specific customizers, all of the regulars on Hisstank bring something different to the table so I get a lot of inspiration and motivation from everyone on here. To give some specific examples, probably the two shared among my brother and I the most are Rob & Kuh_Rupht. Rob because he makes a lot of figures from the era I tend to tackle and he doesn’t get scared off from using bright colors. And then Kuh_Rupht because he’s constantly dropping insanely awesome updates to classic characters. Thanks buddy it’s an honor to be mentioned and I appreciate that my work inspired someone. I’ve got to say that I’m a fan of your work too. Look for a PM from me tomorrow.

—————— After talking to Axon about his awesome Stabbington Brothers customs a while back I made the leap and ordered some green stuff. I think the initial projects all came out really well! I’ll probably show them all off over the next week or so as I get pictures taken. Had a question though, so I sculpted stuff, let it sit for two days or so and then just painted it. Does sealing have any effect on it or once it cures, pretty much fair game to do whatever?

I haven’t seen any ill effects of using hard coat after painting on greenstuff. I sand it a little and give it enough coats of paint to cover well since green stuff showing through is almost never subtle.
EDIT: Gotta clarify that I don't always sand but I recommend sanding if it is a flat surface you've created. Once I added a sticker to a very flat surface made of greenstuff, then wanted to move the sticker. All the paint came right off down to the bare green, but again it was completely flat I had shaped it by mashing it against a sheet of clear plastic bubble. Organic shapes may already have a rough surface from fingerprints. Last edited by ARBCO Avenue; 11-09-2020 at 09:59 PM.. |

I’ve always just straight painted it without issue. Testors Model Master has fantastic innate sealing properties though.

Didn’t even think about sanding it after it hardened, definitely have some experimenting to do during the sculpting phase but good to know I can mess with it a bit after the fact too. Now I need to find more guys to sculpt stuff for, haha. Cut off too large of a piece on my initial test run so sculpting for two guys turned into sculpting for all four who I knew I initially wanted to make pieces for.

There are some great customizers on Hisstank. I don't do a lot of Joe customs. I've made a few here and there, but Hasbro actually did a pretty good job of making the core cast of characters which helps a ton.
I'll give a shout out to Turner who I have talked to in PMs but his MASK customs served as great inspiration for me when making mine and I feel his will always be the goal to strive for. He also had much more limited parts as when he made his MTF and Bossfight as well as other parts I was able to use weren't available at the time. So many people on here have custom threads I look at daily and am in awe of the talent.
