Ax, I'm using this 5 piece set of brushes from Hobby Lobby that they sell for $4. They were literally the cheapest ones there. I have been using them off and on over the past 4 years, but I haven't done a ton of painting.
As for paint, I'm still using Testors Model Masters acrylic, and I do put a little water in to thin them out. Most of the paint's probably 3-4 years old, so maybe I need to put more water in. I usually just put a half dozen drops in to the bottle, is that maybe too little? I also don't stir, just shake the bottle for a minute. I hadn't heard the Windex trick, maybe I'll give that a try. I don’t think it’s the brushes- I’ve used some pretty cheap ones in my day and never had that issue. Could be the paint is too thick- I’ll say with Testors, which I love, I stir then shake- but I do do both. But I’m not really sure... Are you having the issue across the board or is it only certain colors- someone Testors just goes bad and can be inconsistent from batch to batch and color to color.

Hey everyone! So, thanks to Dod Ear, I'm posting here with a recent custom I've wanted to try. Like the Bolo Hale figure I put up, this is another character from a story I did. And much like Bolo, I have a miniature I made which is like a guide for what I want to do with a figure:
Yesterday my order of female figure parts came in. I've never worked with the female build of figures before, so I got some parts I feel sort of match, but could be used as practice pieces. And since I'm going for an 80's flashdance type of shirt, I was thinking about sculpting one. I haven't used Green Stuff or any other processes, so I wanted to try it with sticky tack for practice, just to see if it's possible. This is the result: I think it came out alright. I've tried it a couple of more times with the sticky tack. I also tried to make the bracelets. That's more complicated. Dod recently let me know Vitruvian Armory had the pants I was looking for and directed me to a couple of shirts that I could use to accomplish the same goal. I ordered them. My main concerns now are finding a good female head to match, figuring out the shirt problem, looking for throwing knives in this scale (the only reason she has the big ones in the miniature was because of the limitations in Hero Forge's selection on knives)and the bracelets. I know Boss Fight has snake bracelets that might be close, but I'm still debating that. Anyways, that's where I'm at with the planning on this third custom. The second one i'm currently working on is just missing the jacket piece and that's coming in the mail |

Looks pretty good. Figurerealm has some good tutorials I used a lot in the beginning, this one was for sculpting clothes:
https://www.figurerealm.com/customtu...ion=view&id=38 I would say if you're sculpting the shirt you might as well sculpt the bracelets so you might get exactly what you want. your test runs look pretty good. I use milliput for sculting, but that's because I could get it cheap at Hobby Lobby. I did a "Flash Dance" kind of look on a six inch figure once so maybe it'll help you. Good luck. https://www.figurerealm.com/customfi...=view&id=95872

That’s a good start. For the head, try ROC Baroness or one of the Marvel Universe Black Widow heads. There’s probably other Marvel Universe heads that could work too but I’m not really familiar with the line. You can easily make the bracelets out of brass wire. You can bend it around a rod of the diameter you want. For the knives, Renegades Storm Shadow, Retaliation Ultimate Storm Shadow or 50th Storm Shadow came with similar looking Kunai daggers. Maybe retro Storm Shadow had them too?
As for sculpting, the best advice I can give you is that less is more. Only mix a little bit at a time. It’s better to have to mix more than waste it. You also don’t want to cover your figure with green stuff/Aves or whatever sculpting medium you’re using. A t-shirt ends up looking like a heavy sweater when you do it that way. You only really need to sculpt the edges and any folds of the clothes. Clothes will look more natural and form fitting and it’s less sculpting you have to worry about. Another tip for sculpting is not to try to get it all done in one shot. Working on a little bit at a time and letting the sculpt cure will help keep you from messing up your sculpt as you go. Think of it as saving a draft as you’re writing a paper. |

These are all excellent ideas. I'm looking into Black Widow and Baroness heads now. My next Vitruvian Armory should be coming in Monday. I can get a better idea of how the shirts I ordered will fit and how, if needed, they could be modified to fit what I want.
In terms of the throwing knives, do any other figures have flatter throwing knives? I'd imagine making a throwing knife accessory that small must be a nightmare due to how easy it could be to lose. |

Alright, so I think I figured out my paint issue. It's so silly.
So I'm a stingy guy. So stingy that I hate the idea of wasting any paint, especially since my supply of Model Masters is finite. So what I would do is scrape the paint off the lid and use it. Apparently that's not the best idea if you'd like a nice, smooth layer of paint, and would like to make your brushes easy to clean. |

I ordered a ROC Baroness figure which should be coming in soon. I got my Virtuvian Armory order in, but I wanted to order a few more pieces just to see what my options are.

And so you’ve uncovered a valuable lesson. Patience is key- weighing options, trying different things- taking your time.
