Citadel was my go to until the hobby shop I bought them at closed up a few years ago. Not sure how much more Testors I'll be buying with Hobby Lobby ditching their 40% off one item coupon at the end of the month. I used to dislike the dropper bottles but they're actually easier than trying to pry open jars or keeping Citadel pots closed when the paint starts to accumulate around the lid. Plus the Dollar Tree sells cheap little sets of palettes to use with the droppers.

I save soda caps for paint basins.
Testors is going away anyway- at least Model Master is.

I used to use a lot of Citadel but I've recently been buying more Reaper Master Series paints and really like the coverage without the paint being too thick. Testors is fine I just hate the way the bottles eventually seize up on me and I have to run them under hot water and wrench them open. Vallejo has a lot of really bright colors but it always feels a bit tacky to me when it dries.

I just bought a bunch of MM paints to stock up for a while, lol. I don’t want to switch over! :(
May have to look at horsehair. I tend to buy cheap brushes, trimming/eventually tossing as needed. Why do you love them, Slice? You said reliable, but also hinted at long-lasting?

I've only used Testors Model Masters acrylic paint, but I've been super pleased with it. I actually water it down quite a bit, and do a ton of coats; it always comes out great for me that way.
I'm worried about what I'll do when my supply runs out and I can't find any more in stores. Testors feels very much like factory paint to me, and I'd like to find another brand that has the same feel to it. Last edited by Matt82; 02-03-2021 at 09:02 AM.. |

Well, I'll be trying out a bunch of stuff over the next several months and let everyone know what I think- from the prospective of someone who's been a fan of Model Master since I started customizing.
So far I've tried Vallejo, Citadel, and Tamiya. I find Vallejo and Citadel to be pretty comparable- they have a great variety of colors and the coverage is pretty great and generally they dry nicely, as well. What they lack is the durability of Testors. Some colors of Vallejo I can rub of with my thumb days after curing. Citadel is a little tougher, but if you play with your customs, a top coat is necessary. I know a lot of guys do that anyway, so it's not a big deal. Tamiya seems the most durable of the three, but are super glossy and frankly, the odor is something I can't get over. You need to open a window or work outside with these guys, and I'd just rather not play that game, especially with kids in the house, so Tamiya are pretty much a no go for me. I'll update when I have new entrants or if opinions evolve.

I’ve only used the model master acryl and Tamiya. Mostly the model masters, only had maybe 6 bottles of tamiya. I actually like the tamiya probably better. It does seem to have a stronger odor which I’m not taking lightly. It seems (in the bottles I got) to cover well. It comes in bigger bottles and I think was cheaper. The plastic caps seemed to be easier to take off even years later. For me, the model masters were easier to find (hobby lobby). But I think I like the tamiya as good or better. I hadn’t considered the glossy issue in their colors, but I have bottles of model master clear flat and clear semi gloss.
However, I’m pretty clueless about their color selection.
