So, it's really not hard for a skilled customizer to paint better than Hasbro does. Customizers aren't limited by budgets. Customizers don't have to produce hundreds of thousands of units within a small time frame. Customizers can refine paint applications which may be unsatisfactory upon first attempt.
That said, a realistically shaded, highlighted, and weathered 1:18 scale army man is going to look wildly out of place next to off the shelf Hasbro product. And therein lies the rub. If you're displaying a large collection, do you paint to the fullest of your ability and the incongruity be damned, allowing your superior skills to obviously eclipse the mass market product? Do you repaint the entirety of your collection until the standards of every figure meet your own? I must admit that the prospect is not a pleasant one for a line as vast as Joe. Or do you dumb down your talent, to the point where customized and factory are nearly indistinguishable? Personally, I take a different approach with different lines. For Star Wars, I collect only Jedi and Sith which narrows the workload to a point where I'm ok repainting each and every figure I buy to a highly exacting standard. For Joe, I compromise as best I can. Small details are painted that Hasbro apps couldn't afford or would render sloppily, and some minor highlighting and shading is applied, but I try to keep it subtle enough that from a distance it'll blend with an off the shelf toy. What's your approach to this dilemma? |

I don't customize, but I guess I'm not as picky as most of you as for the most part, my Joes are just fine out of the package.
So I guess, even if I customized, I'd be fine cause I don't see any major issues with the majority of my Joes.

once you have a good mold how hard is it really to control the quality of the product coming from it?
hasbro could have done a much better job with the lines over the years that could have reflected closer to what some of the customizers here put up. they choose not to. not sure were im going with that but anyways...........

I keep them separate. Hasbro figures are just out on a shelf, customs are in a sealed display case.

i do my best when i customize to get them they way i want them to look. Not Hasbros take. But i do want them to blend in with the hasbro figs. So when i set them you can tell mine apart from hasbros but not by much. though now a days you can tell my customs apart from hasbros as i only make O ring customs lol.

I do my best but my customizing skills are limited. That being said though I tweak all figures in my collection some way or another. The ones I don't usually belong to individual character collections. I have a shelf with various Snake-Eyes, Another with various Storm Shadows, Another for Nova, etc etc. These sections are small and usually in corners and only filled with ones I really like. Due to downsizing my biggest collection so far is the Marvel Universe with all the figures so far, that however has many revamps in it as well. I can't tell a difference because I think I suck at customizing but my brother can tell at a glance if I have added something or "fixed" a character as soon as he enters my game room (which in 3 months will expand to be a game house bwahahahaha.......sorry delerious with all the crap atm)
